The 76ers yesterday acquired a small forward, but it was not Derrick McKey, formerly of the Indiana Pacers. Because the 35-year-old McKey is ailing with a strained hamstring, the Sixers opted to sign Tim James, a third-year forward out of Miami waived by the Charlotte Hornets before their first game of the regular season. James was not given a guaranteed contract, which means he could be waived at any time should McKey, or another player, become available. To make room for James, a first-round draft pick out of Miami in 1999, the Sixers waived point guard Ira Bowman. "We're going to give him a chance," Larry Brown said before last night's game against the Pacers. "I don't know when Derrick would be available, or if he wants to play. We get a young kid in here, obviously a first-round pick, and we'll see." |
