Celts and Jazz Mix it Up

Picking right next to each other, the Utah Jazz and Boston Celtics are keeping an eye on the competition.

Kevin O'Connor, the Jazz vice president of basketball operations, is set to make the 14th, 16th and 21st picks in the first round of the Draft. Danny Ainge, the Celtics executive director of basketball operations, has the 15th, 24th and 25th picks. The two teams have interviewed the same batch of prospects and have similar needs to fill.

Both are looking to package picks and move up for a higher selection.

Pierce on the move?

As the draft gets closer, we may see a record number of deals being made.

Could one include Paul Pierce?

"He's not untradable," said Ainge. "There's no such thing. I would be asking about Paul Pierce. He's worth the money. He fits the criteria everyone is looking for."

"I would not say Paul's a superstar," said Ainge. "My classification of a superstar is different than a lot of people's classification of a superstar. Tim Duncan, Shaquille O'Neal, and Kevin Garnett are the three superstars we have in our league today.

"Paul's a star. He's a perennial All-Star player. I don't classify that as a superstar. I think a superstar is a franchise player that year in and year out has all the characteristics to carry a championship team."

When Ainge makes those comments you can't help but wonder which team Pierce may be on by next season.

Celtics Look at Bigs

With three choices in the Draft, the Boston Celtics have their eye on a big man and are likely to come away with at least one 7-footer if they hold onto their picks. Among players interesting Celtics GM Danny Ainge and head coach Doc Rivers are Pavel Podkolzine, the 7-foot-5 Siberian, Al Jefferson, a 6-10 high schooler, 7-3 Peter John-Ramos and Latvian power forward Andris Biedrins. Robert Swift, a 7-0 high schooler with above-average offensive skills and aggressiveness, will further complicate the Celtics' Draft-night task.
