Davis all charged up

With a busy summer schedule after the first breakthrough season of his professional career, some wondered if Baron Davis was wearing himself too thin.

Especially after taking, in essence, only two weeks off from basketball in the past two years.

But Davis says the energy is back and he’s anxious to get his third NBA season under way tonight when the Charlotte Hornets host the Cleveland Cavaliers at 7 p.m.

"Everybody is just ready for the preseason to be over," said Davis, considered one of the NBA’s top rising stars at point guard. "I know I’m ready."

For all his faults, Bass is one tough negotiator

Charlotte Hornets co-owners George Shinn and Ray Wooldridge keep singing the blues about the prospects of staying in this city beyond this year.

Their problem, as last Thursday continued to show, is that they’re putting the wrong people in charge of negotiations. Think about it: If executive Bob Bass can trade away a supposedly untradeable player like Derrick Coleman, why couldn’t he also work a deal with the city that would benefit the franchise?

Sure, negotiating with city officials is different from negotiating with NBA general managers, but the message is pretty clear: Show reluctance in making a trade, but be patient in waiting for the deal you want.
