Chris Tomasson of the Beacon Journal reports that the Cavs, who have 13 players with guaranteed contracts, are taking their time in deciding whether to sign a 14th player to a guaranteed deal. The Cavs are looking for a third point guard and another big man. The leading candidate to get a guaranteed offer is Seattle free agent point guard Shammond Williams. If the Cavs were to sign Williams to an offer sheet, which would be at least three years long and likely worth between $2.5-$3 million the first year, the SuperSonics would have 15 days to match it. It's unclear whether they would.
in related news, the Cavs are unlikely to offer point guards Damon Jones or Anthony Goldwire or power forward Carlos Rogers any guaranteed money, but are considering inviting them to training camp. And the chances are looking better each day that often-injured center Zydrunas Ilgauskas will be on the court when training camp starts on October 2nd. For the last two weeks, Ilgauskas has been working out on the court with Cavs assistant Ron Ekker. Ilgauskas has been getting stronger with each session. ``He will visit the doctor the week before training camp and tests will be done,'' Cavs general manager Jim Paxson said. ``They'll then determine what he'll be able to do, whether it's participate in 50 percent of the workouts or whatever.''
