Cleveland Cavaliers Wiretap

Over Hill, Bimbo next to be waived by Cavs?

The Cleveland Cavaliers managed to part ways yet again with power forward Tyronne Hill, the ex-NBA finalist expected to sign with either Philadelphia or Dallas, and now the Cavaliers are looking to part with yet another veteran in the form of guard Bimbo Coles.

Bob Finnan of The News Herald writes that red tape is holding up the buyout for point guard Coles, and that it should be announced today or tomorrow. If he's not waived by Saturday at midnight, he won't be eligible to join another team for the playoffs.

Cavs center Zydrunas Ilgauskas said he would miss his former teammates, but he can't fault either side's motives.

"The guys weren't playing," he said. "They wanted to get out of here and get some playing time. It works out good for both of them."

When Coles is waived, it will leave the Cavs with 11 players. They don't plan to add another player for the time being.

Sixers considering bringing back Hill

Tyronne Hill was a key member of the Sixers team that went to the NBA Finals two seasons ago, but was then traded to the Cavaliers for forward Matt Harpring (now with the Jazz). While the trade hurt Hill, he might soon be back in the Sixers fold after his wish to be waived by the Cleveland Cavaliers was granted yesterday.

The player who might play a major role in getting Hill back in Philadelphia may be Monty Williams, coach Larry Brown distressed at his decision not to dress for the game.

Phil Jasner of the Philadelphia Daily News writes that Williams, in uniform earlier in the evening, decided against playing because of recurring problems with his surgically repaired left knee. He has appeared in just seven games all season; he played 5 minutes in the first half of Sunday night's victory over Cleveland after having three tubes of fluid drained from the knee.

"I don't think we can go much longer like this," Brown said. "It's not fair to the team, it's not fair to Monty. If he's going to come one day and want to give it a try and then the next day can't go, we can't overcome that. We've got to just figure this thing out. It's been this way all year with so many different people."

Other teams in the hunt for Hill's services include New Jersey, Dallas, San Antonio and the Lakers.

"Tyrone and I will talk about it and make a decision about what he wants to do, probably sometime [today]," Bartelstein said. "He has great feelings for Larry Brown, [general manager] Billy King and the players there, but it's a tough call."

Coles to run free?

Chris Whitney might not be the only guard on the move today, The Morning Journal in Cleveland reporting that the Cavaliers are also working on a buyout, this time for guard Bimbo Coles.

The Cavaliers were hoping to activate guard Smush Parker in time for tonight's game against the New Jersey Nets. They reportedly approached Coles about returning to the injured list, and according to a source, Coles balked.

Cavs interim coach Keith Smart said Coles was excused from practice yesterday.

''He had a little conversation with (Cavs general manager Jim) Paxson,'' Smart said.

Coles has a player option next season for $2.6 million, but according to the article the Cavaliers believe that if Coles is brought out then the option cannot be exercised. The situation sounds similar to that of J.R. Ried who was in a similar situation with the Cavaliers only three years ago.

Earlier in the season, the Cavs tried to buy out the final year of Coles' contract, or just pay a portion of it, but Coles declined. Yesterday, the two sides were reportedly close to finalizing the deal.
