Cavs give Paxson an extension

Jim Paxson's tenure with the Cavaliers has had its peaks and valleys as the franchise endured a hard rebuilding process.

The Cavaliers senior vice president and general manager will be around, though, to see if his long-term plans pay off. According to a league source, the team has rewarded Paxson with a contract extension, which is expected to be announced by team owner Gordon Gund this morning.

Terms of the deal were not immediately known.

Paxson, a Dayton native and former NBA All-Star, took over for Wayne Embry in 1998 and was about to begin the final guaranteed year of his contract.

Paxson's credits include trading Shawn Kemp with $75 million remaining on his contract and unloading Bobby Sura's deal to help free salary space.

His sign-and-trade deal with Chris Gatling and Miami in 2001 produced a diamond-in-the-rough Ricky Davis. His decision to pick Andre Miller with the No. 8 pick in 1999 proved wise, and the early returns on the 2002 draft with Dajaun Wagner and Carlos Boozer have been positive.

Cavaliers sign pick Kapono

Second-round draft choice Jason Kapono signed a contract with the Cavaliers yesterday, although the terms of the deal were not released.

Kapono, a 6-8 forward from UCLA, was the 31st player taken in the 2003 draft. He was the first player in UCLA history to be named MVP in each of his four seasons and the only player to lead the team in scoring each of those seasons. In 11 summer league games with the Cavaliers, Kapono averaged 8.2 points in 22.6 minutes per game.

"Jason is a proven scorer who has shown he can knock down perimeter shots," Cavaliers General Manager Jim Paxson said. "We feel he shows great potential and will grow to become a very effective player in this league."

Cavaliers Sign Jason Kapono

The Cleveland Cavaliers have signed Jason Kapono to a contract, it was announced today by Jim Paxson, Senior Vice President and General Manager. Per team policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed. Kapono was the second round (31st pick overall) selection of the Cavaliers in the 2003 NBA Draft.

Kapono, 6-8, finished his college career ranked third on UCLA’s all-time scoring list with 2,095 points. He was UCLA’s first four-time All-Pac-10 honoree and the only player in history to lead the Bruins in scoring four straight seasons. In 127 career contests, Kapono compiled averages of 16.5 points and 5.1 rebounds per game while shooting .469 (699-1491) FG% and 44.6% (317-710) from three point range.

"Jason is a proven scorer who has shown he can knock down perimeter shots. We feel he shows great potential and will grow to become a very effective player in this league," Paxson said.
