Gooden Wants To Remain In Cleveland

Drew Gooden, who was subject to trade rumors before February's trade deadline, says he would like to remain in Cleveland.

"I want to be a Cavalier," Gooden said. "This is my favorite year (in my career). I did my job when I was out there. That most attractive thing is we won. I want to be on a winning team."

He also wants to get paid according to the Memphis Commercial-Appeal, and the power forward could ask for as much as $7 million a season, with a maximum five-year contract.

"Of course, I'll keep my ear to the street," said Gooden.

"Drew did a great job for us," said Cavs GM Danny Ferry. "He's a big part of us winning 50 games. We're very interested in keeping Drew in our uniform."

Cavaliers Give Brown Big Boost Of Confidence

The Cleveland Cavaliers have exercised the fourth-year contract option for Head Coach Mike Brown, Cavaliers General Manager Danny Ferry announced today.

“We firmly believe the Cavs have the right person on the bench as we build towards the future. This decision is reflective of the trust and mutual commitment within our team as we work together in bringing Cleveland sustained success and the NBA Championship," said Ferry.

Brown will now be under contract with the Cavaliers through the 2008-09 season. In his first year as an NBA head coach, Brown became the winningest rookie head coach in Cavaliers’ history as he led Cleveland to a 50-32 record and the third best record in the Eastern Conference. He became the first rookie head coach in the NBA since Rick Carlisle in 2001-02 to post 50 wins in a season. During the regular season and playoffs, Brown led Cleveland to a perfect 7-0 record in overtime games while the Cavaliers posted a 14-5 record in games decided by three points or less.

Ilgauskas On The Block?

According to a report in the Akron Beacon-Journal, the Cavaliers' longest tenured and tallest player, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, could be the subject of trade talks.

Ilgauskas' status with the Cavaliers depends on the direction that GM Danny Ferry and coach Mike Brown decide to take the team, with an offensive minded assistant coach perhaps in the team's future.

Ilgauskas struggled during the postseason, averaging 10 points and shooting 45 percent, both well below his regular-season averages.

The Cavs sometimes performed better with a quicker lineup on the floor, including young big man Anderson Varejao.

Officials from other teams, as well as some of Ilgauskas' teammates, believe he is under-used in the Cavs' current offensive scheme.

The answer might be that he is not the right fit with the talent on the roster, and the Cavs could look to join a growing trend in the NBA, which is to play a more up-tempo game with less emphasis on a back-to-the-basket center like Ilgauskas.

Ferry, however, is a big supporter of Ilgauskas and pushed to re-sign him when he was hired as GM last June.
