Greece Defeats Germany To Take Championship

Greece beat Germany 78-62 Sunday to win its second European Championship, frustrating Dirk Nowitzki with strong defense and getting 22 points from Theodoros Papaloukas.

Nowitzki, the tournament's MVP, scored 23 points but was only 1-for-8 from 3-point range. The Dallas Mavericks star had nine rebounds but four turnovers.

Earlier, France won the bronze medal, with San Antonio Spurs guard Tony Parker scoring 25 points in a 98-68 victory over Spain. It was France's its first medal at the European Championship since a silver in 1959.

Dirk’s Germany Falls To Italian 'Luck' In Euro Games Opening Day

Dallas Mavericks forward and key piece on the German National Team, Dirk Nowitzki, poured in 27 points and hauled down 15 rebounds last night. However, his big game was not enough as Germany fell to Italy 84-82 in overtime.

"Italy was simply the luckier team and we did not play smartly in the second half," Nowitzki said.

Stackhouse Seeks Starting Job

The Mavericks would like to see Jerry Stackhouse continue in his role as the team's sixth man.

Not so fast.

"I'm not conceding anything," Stackhouse said.

Last season, Stackhouse's first with the Mavs, he was used primarily as the sixth man. Injuries limited him to 56 games -- he started seven -- and an average of 14.9 points in 28.9 minutes per game.

But Stackhouse believes that when Michael Finley was waived Aug. 15, it paved the way for him to move into the starting lineup. Never mind that the Mavs have since acquired Doug Christie, whom they hope to move into Finley's old slot.

Stackhouse said he believes the job should be won or lost in training camp.

"We're going to obviously miss Michael Finley because he did a lot for this franchise," Stackhouse said. "And, by adding Doug Christie, he should be able to help us improve our defense.

"But we first have to see if Christie's healthy and then go from there."

Christie, 35, had surgery during the off-season to remove bone spurs from his left ankle.

Though Christie passed the Mavs' physical, Stackhouse said Finley's longtime starting spot should be given to the player who earns it.
