NBA Said To Be On Verge Of Formalizing Dress Code

If the NBA is focused on making sure the quality and style of play is perceived as blue-collar, there is now also a movement that could mean the players - at least in certain instances - might also have to wear them.

The specifics of a dress code for, among other instances, injured or inactive players in street clothes on the bench during games, are still being formulated. Details have yet to be distributed to the 30 teams.

But commissioner David Stern told the Boston Globe Wednesday night that he expects the code to include sport coats and collared shirts, and exclude blue jeans. Stern was among the honorees at a National Braille Press event, and when asked about casual dress by the players, said, "Well, the job description has changed."

Stern said, "We're working on a job description."

Billy King, the 76ers' president and general manager, said yesterday, "There will be some new policy. When it comes down, we'll implement it."

Dan Wasserman, the director of communications for the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), said, "We've agreed to discuss adopting some general guidelines for a dress code. As far as the specifics of what the league is proposing, we are actively seeking player input."

Tellem Cuts Ties With SFX

Saying he wants to be in control of his own destiny, superagent Arn Tellem has cut his ties with SFX Sports.

"We've done very well and I have no regrets," said Tellem, who resigned from his role as chief executive. "But I think we have a unique opportunity to have a sports agency which will endure for many more years."

Tellem said that, within the next two months, he expects to announce an alliance with a global company whose main business is in sports.

The move comes a year after Tellem signed a new deal with the SFX Sports. Tellem sold his Tellem & Associates practice to the entertainment giant in 2000 for a reported $25 million. As part of the deal, Tellem had an option to buy out his more than 100 players, as long as he did it by this Friday.

Tellem says he'll take all his clients with him after exercising that option for an undisclosed amount.

Tellum's clients include NBA players Tracy McGrady, Kobe Bryant, Jermaine O'Neal and Pau Gasol. His baseball clients include Jason Giambi, Hideki Matsui, Nomar Garciaparra and Barry Zito, among others. Tellem said he will take the group of five agents he oversees with him as well.

Female Arizona Basketball Star Polk Dies After Collapse

Shawntinice Polk, center on the University of Arizona's women's basketball team, died Monday after collapsing on the court of the school's arena.

Richard Paige, associate media relations director, said Polk, 22 and a senior, was not working out or practicing in McKale Center when she collapsed.

Polk was taken to the University Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead. The cause of death was not immediately known and an autopsy will be performed.

Coach Joan Bonvicini, who had been out of town, returned to the campus to meet with the team.

"This is a terribly sad, heartbreaking day in Arizona women's basketball," Bonvicini said. "I can't put into words the pain and sadness that we're all feeling right now."
