Blazers' Randolph arrested for underage drinking

The (AP) reports: -- Portland Trail Blazers forward Zach Randolph was arrested for underage drinking during the Memorial Day weekend, police said.

Randolph was arrested shortly before midnight Friday after city police stopped the sport utility vehicle he was driving because it matched the description of an SUV being used by gang members.

Police said Randolph's blood alcohol content was less than half the state's legal limit of .08 percent. However, the legal drinking age in Indiana is 21, and Randolph does not turn 21 until July 16.

Randolph could face a 180-day jail term if he is convicted of underage drinking.

A 19-year-old passenger in the SUV was also arrested. Both are scheduled to appear in court Monday.

Pacers Walsh supports Bird team

Larry Bird’s last gig in the NBA was the head coaching position in Indiana, and as he now works towards acquiring an expansion franchise in Charlotte he has the support of Pacers president Donnie Walsh.

He knows exactly what kind of player will win, and what kind of player won't. He'll know exactly what he wants," Walsh said.

"In a 21/2-hour meeting, he told me everything he would do with this team. And he did not change an iota from that plan," Walsh said of the man he hired to coach the Pacers. "Everything from when practice would be to how he'd prepare the team for the NBA Finals.”

"He's far more intelligent than people realize. He's very clear-minded and focused."

Walsh also said that he believes with the presence of Bird being one of the group that is vying for the expansion franchise their chances are boosted. The group is trying for a team as soon as 2003-04.

"The league will be a better place with him back," Walsh said.

Commitment to Pacers, youth remains for Miller

While veteran Reggie Miller had some critical words for some of his team mates after the Pacers double overtime loss to the Nets in Game 5 last week, the good news for Indiana fans is that he still remains committed to the cause.

Miller was upbeat at a recent private meeting with president Donnie Walsh and coach Isiah Thomas, and then was similarly upbeat in a recent appearance on the David Letterman show.

"He was pretty upbeat with me," Walsh said. "He's like me in realizing the young guys just had to go through that situation (against the Nets). I think Reggie likes playing with these young guys, I really do."

"I really had my young guys believing and it's tough that I didn't come through for them," he said then. "They were ready to run through a brick wall for me. When you know you've let someone down, that grasps at your heart."
