Pacers lose Malone to the Knicks' staff

Brendan Malone's tenure as an assistant coach with the Indiana Pacers ended late Thursday, when he signed a contract to rejoin the New York Knicks in a similar capacity.

It's a return to roots for Malone, who'll rejoin the franchise he left three years ago to join Isiah Thomas' staff. He will be reunited with his son Mike, an assistant coach/advance scout, and Knicks coach Don Chaney, whom he worked for in Detroit in the 1990s.

Malone saw it as an opportunity to return home.

"That's the bottom line for me," Malone said Friday. "I'm a New Yorker; this is home for me.

Coach Malone joins Don's chane-gang

Brendan Malone is returning to the Knicks to reunite with his son and Don Chaney.

Malone has left the Pacers and agreed to terms to become one of Chaney's assistants, The Post has learned. According to league sources, his son Mike Malone, now an associate, will also be promoted.

The Post mentioned the elder Malone as a possible Knick candidate the day after Chaney fired three assistants. Malone, a New York native, was Chaney's assistant in Detroit in the early-to-mid-1990's.

The Knicks, who have not announced the hiring, declined to comment. Chaney is expected to add one more assistant.

Walsh comes to Thomas' defense

Even before the Pacers had been eliminated from the playoffs, naysayers had coach Isiah Thomas' job on the line, and they have continued to spread rumors that team president Donnie Walsh would fire him.

There was even speculation that Walsh was scheduling a news conference on Friday to announce that Thomas was out.

"That's bull,'' an enraged Walsh said by phone. "I've been denying those rumors since the fifth game of the playoffs.''
