Walsh happy that secret meetings with Bird worked

When Donnie Walsh was talking to Larry Bird about coaching the Indiana Pacers in May 1997, he took him to dinner at the Keystone Grill.

Popular restaurants aren't normally a good place to go, and this was no exception. They were recognized, and someone tipped off a friend who worked at WRTV-6. By the time Walsh and Bird emerged from dinner, a reporter and photographer from the station were waiting outside the front door.

Walsh didn't need to be reminded of that awkward experience when he was negotiating last summer with Bird about returning to the Pacers.

Pollard, Artest to face questions for a while

Two primary questions confront the Indiana Pacers' front line, and the answers they bring will have a major impact on the season.

Can Scot Pollard adequately replace Brad Miller at center?

Can Ron Artest replace last season's suspension-filled season with increased availability and productivity?
