Dennis Scott signs with Lakers

Dennis Scott, once a hero with the Orlando Magic for his three point shooting ability, has signed with the Los Angeles Lakers. Scott holds NBA records for most 3-point field goals made in a season (267) and a game (11). He is joined in LA with forward Paul Shirley, a rookie 6-10, 230-pound free agent from Iowa State.

Lakers Expected to Sign Dennis Scott Today

The LA Times reports that the Lakers are expected to sign veteran shooter Dennis Scott to a one-year contract today.

Scott, who turned 33 on Sept. 5 and did not play in the NBA last season, made 39.7% of his three-point attempts and averaged 12.9 points in a 10-year career. He spent four of those years as a teammate of Shaquille O'Neal's in Orlando, and the two remain close.

Scott, at 6 feet 8, will attempt to make the team as a small forward, where the Lakers are thin, with only Rick Fox and Devean George.

The team signed Dickey Simpkins on Tuesday. A 6-foot-9 forward, Simpkins, 29, also was out of the league last season after being released from Seattle's training camp. He played on three of Laker Coach Phil Jackson's last three championship teams in Chicago. He averaged 4.3 points and 3.6 rebounds in six seasons. The Lakers also expected to sign Paul Shirley, a 6-10 forward out of Iowa State.

Lakers sign free agent F Simpkins

Having won three consecutive championships with the Chicago Bulls, Dickey Simpkins will try to help the Los Angeles Lakers make it three in a row.

The two-time NBA champion Lakers signed Simpkins on Wednesday, reuniting the free agent forward with coach Phil Jackson.

Terms were not disclosed.

Simpkins, 29, is a seven-year veteran who played most recently with the Bulls in 1999-2000, averaging 4.2 points and 5.4 rebounds in 69 games. The 6-9, 255-pound Providence product won championships with Jackson in Chicago from 1996-98.
