Laettner Activated; Newly Aquired Steve Smith To IL

The Miami HEAT announced today that they have activated Christian Laettner from the injured list and placed Steve Smith on the injured list with a lower back strain

Laettner has appeared in 32 games for the HEAT so far this season, averaging 5.7 points and 2.9 rebounds in 15.8 minutes per game. He was placed on the injured list on February 3, 2005 with left foot plantar fasciitis.

Smith was obtained in a trade on February 24th that sent Malik Allen to the Charlotte Bobcats. In 37 games with Charlotte this season, he has averaged 7.9 points, 1.3 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 17.2 minutes per game.

Shaq's MRI Results Revealed

The Miami HEAT announced today that the results of an MRI performed on center Shaquille O’Neal has revealed a very mild left knee sprain.

O’Neal was evaluated by Dr. Harlan Selesnick at Doctors Hospital in Coral Gables, and his status remains day-to-day.

O’Neal was injured in the first quarter of Tuesday’s contest against the Chicago Bulls.

Steve Smith Returns To Miami In A Trade For Malik Allen

Steve Smith was traded back to the Miami Heat on Tuesday. He came over in exchange for Malik Allen and cash considerations.

"We are very excited to welcome back Steve to the Heat organization," Heat president Pat Riley said in a statement released by the team. "In addition to him being a great shooter and his ability to play multiple positions, he also brings great character and veteran leadership to our team."

"This is a great opportunity for him to return where he started in the NBA and go to a legitimate championship contender," said Bobcats coach and general manager Bernie Bickerstaff. "We promised Steve if an opportunity arose ... that we would accommodate him and this was one such opportunity."
