Mississippi State All-SEC forward Jarvis Varnado has declared himself eligible for the 2009 NBA draft, but will leave the door open to return for his senior year by not hiring an agent.
This past season as a junior, the 6-foot-9, 210-pound Brownsville, Tenn., native started a school-record 36 games and averaged a team-high 12.9 points and 8.8 boards in leading the Bulldogs to a 23-13 ledger and a trip to the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row.
“I just want to test the water to see where I stand,” said Varnado, who led the nation with 170 blocks, an SEC single-season record, and has 394 for his career. “I’m not going to hire an agent so I can have an opportunity to return.”

Phenom scorer Stephen Curry from Davidson will announce his decision as to whether he's entering the NBA draft or staying in school on Thursday, the Associated Press is reporting.
The school has called a late-morning news conference at its athletic complex. Curry and his father, former NBA player Dell Curry, will attend along with Davidson coach Bob McKillop.
Not even Dell knows what Stephen is going to do, telling ESPN.com's Andy Katz Wednesday night that his son would tell him Thursday morning before the news conference whether he would declare for the NBA draft.

Tennessee forward Tyler Smith has entered his name into the NBA Draft, but by not hiring an agent he has left the door open for a return to school, the Associated Press is reporting.
"Playing in the NBA has been a goal of mine for as long as I can remember, and I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to come to Tennessee and grow as a basketball player and as a man," Smith said in a statement Wednesday. "Two seasons with coach [Bruce] Pearl and his staff have helped me move closer to my goal of playing professional basketball at the highest level."
During the 2008-09 season, Smith led the team with an average 17.4 points and 3.4 assists per game. He also grabbed an average 5.8 rebounds per game and led the team with 76 percent free-throw shooting.
"Tyler has earned this opportunity to test the waters," Pearl said. "This is absolutely the right thing to do. Tyler did not choose to work out last season because you can only take advantage of this opportunity one time. He did not feel he was close enough to being a first-rounder a year ago.
