KFAN out of Minnesota is reporting that the Timberwolves and Sonics are talking about a trade for Gary Payton. Sketchy details have the Wolves trading Terrell Brandon, Wally Szczerbiak and Rasho Nesterovic in return for Payton and perhaps another player.
Many astute NBA fans have noted that a 3rd team may have to get involved to satisfy Seattle's demands.

Sometimes the most interesting moves are the ones that don't happen. Gary Payton is still in Seattle. He won't go to a losing team or to the east coast. He's got an expensive trade kicker and wants an extension. In other words, he's put conditions that make him virtually untradeable.
And Vin Baker looks like he's back in Seattle. No matter what he does or says, his contract makes him equally untradeable. The Sonics, Baker and his agent got together Thursday, and Baker has been told he'll be in the team's starting line-up for the coming season.

Seattle P-I columnist Art Theil says that it's time for the Sonics to move Gary Payton. "Axle-deep in mediocrity while the game rapidly changes, the Sonics have no way up except to move Payton out." Theil also says the team has to be prepared for the fact that is going to get worse over the next two or three years, and needs to start rebuilding as soon as possible.
In a feature on Wally Walker, the P-I's Ronald Tillery also makes it clear that the Sonics are headed nowhere but down and must start making drastic moves. Plan A combines overpaid Vin Baker and the #12 pick for a solid post player, while Plan B sees both Baker and Payton going so the team can start over.
