Payton: Schultz promised extension

Denny O'Neil of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer Reporter reports: Owner Howard Schultz and point guard Gary Payton haven't spoken since the summer and apparently all is not well between them.

In a television interview that aired yesterday, Payton implied that last summer a promise was made to him concerning a contract extension by Schultz.

"He knows what he said and I know what was said and we know what was said between the two," Payton said in an interview on Fox Sports Net's "The Best Damn Sports Show Period."

Payton continued, "As I said, 'If you changed your mind, you could have told me.' "

Schultz previously has said that that an extension was never discussed when he spoke to Payton last May. Schultz said he told Payton the team was committed to him finishing his career as a Sonic if that's what he wanted.

Payton said in the interview that there are things that make him want to stay with the Sonics, but his future won't be decided until after the season.

Anderson demands buyout

Percy Allen of the Seattle Times reports: Kenny Anderson doesn't want to Gary Payton's backup and he wants out.

Anderson told his agent to contact the Sonics about the possibility of buying out the remaining year of his contract and allowing him to play for another team.

Citing anonymous sources, a report in yesterday's Boston Herald said the Sonics were considering paying $6 million of Anderson's $9.185-million salary, and would need to find another team willing to pay the difference.

However, Anderson won't forfeit any money and doesn't believe the Seattle will let him go.
