Sonics Re-Sign Mateen Cleaves

The Seattle SuperSonics today re-signed guard Mateen Cleaves, Sonics General Manager Rick Sund announced. As per team policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

“Mateen is a quality individual and a great teammate,” said Sund. “He had an excellent summer for us in Utah and last season was a pleasant surprise. We’d like to give him another opportunity this season.”

The Sonics also announced today they have invited six additional players beyond their existing roster to this season’s training camp, which begins Tuesday, Oct. 4. The players are Noel Felix (Fresno State), Roger Powell (Illinois), Alex Scales (Oregon), Tre Simmons (Washington), Omar Thomas (Texas El-Paso) and Ezra Williams (Georgia).

With Murray Signed, Is Evans Next?

All that remains for Sonics GM Rick Sund is to sign forward Reggie Evans, who was hoping to cash in on the Sonics' surprising 52-30 record like former teammates Antonio Daniels and Jerome James, who received $30 million deals from Washington and New York, respectively.

At this late stage of the free-agency period, it's unlikely that Evans will receive a lucrative offer, and chances are growing that he might gamble much like Radmanovic and Murray and opt for a one-year deal. The gamble for him would be greater because there isn't much of a market for 6-8 forwards who can rebound and defend but have limited scoring abilities.

Sonics Sign Flip Murray

Seattle SuperSonics General Manager Rick Sund announced today that Ronald “Flip” Murray has signed a one-year qualifying offer to remain with the Sonics.

“We’re excited to have Flip back next season,” said Sund. “He adds explosiveness to our backcourt and is versatile enough to play both guard positions. In his two-plus years with the Sonics, Flip has been a prolific scorer and possesses one of the league’s best crossover dribbles.”

Last season, Murray’s third in the NBA, he averaged 7.0 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game in 49 games. He was originally acquired by the Sonics on Feb. 20, 2003 from the Milwaukee Bucks along with Ray Allen, Kevin Ollie and a conditional first-round draft choice.
