Mavericks' Fortson suspended for three games

NEW YORK (AP) Dallas center Danny Fortson was suspended by the NBA for three games without pay on Friday for a flagrant foul against Phoenix rookie Zarko Cabarkapa during a loss to the Suns.

Cabarkapa, a 6-foot-11 forward from Serbia and Montenegro, drove to the basket with less than three minutes to go in Wednesday's game, and Phoenix leading by 24.

As Cabarkapa was in the air, Fortson shoved him, sending the rookie sprawling to the ground. He landed hard on his back, with his hands down to support his fall. Cabarkapa broke his right wrist and is expected to miss six to eight weeks.

Fortson's will begin serving his suspension on Friday when the Mavericks play at Denver. He will also miss home games against Minnesota on Saturday and Washington on Tuesday.

Suns activate Archibald, place Cabarkapa on IR

PHOENIX (AP) The Phoenix Suns placed top draft choice Zarko Cabarkapa on the injured list Friday with a broken right wrist and activated 6-foot-11 forward Robert Archibald.

Cabarkapa was expected to be out six to eight weeks after being injured in Wednesday night's game against Dallas when he was shoved to the floor by Danny Fortson while driving toward the basket. Fortson was charged with a flagrant foul and was suspended by the NBA for three games without pay on Friday.

The 6-foot-11 forward from Serbia and Montenegro was averaging 6.5 points and 3.4 rebounds while shooting .500 from the field in 11 games.

Archibald, acquired from Memphis in a Sept. 30 trade, has not played this season. He has been out with a sprained toe on his left foot.

In addition to being without Cabarkapa, the Suns were short-handed at small forward for Friday's game against Golden State, because Shawn Marion missed his second straight game with a left ankle sprain.

Decision on Fortson likely to come today

Today, Mavericks forward Danny Fortson will find out whether or not he gets suspended for his flagrant foul on Suns' rookie forward Zarko Cabarkapa, in which Cabarkapa suffered a fractured wrist.

"The NBA office was closed Thursday, but (NBA senior vice president for basketball operations Stu) Jackson said via e-mail the league probably would make a ruling Friday before the Mavericks play at Denver."
