Portland Trail Blazers WiretapStoudamire may stand trial Sept. 29Portland Trail Blazers guard Damon Stoudamire may stand trial Sept. 29 on drug charges, depending on the outcome of arguments that day over a motion to suppress evidence. Defense attorneys Steve Houze and Michael Piccarreta will seek to persuade a Pima County Justice Court judge to suppress evidence stemming from a search of Stoudamire on July 3 at Tucson International Airport, while Assistant County Attorney Bruce Chalk will try to ensure the evidence can be used. Stoudamire was stopped as he prepared to board a flight to New Orleans after setting off an airport metal detector. Authorities contend that he had rolling papers and a substance wrapped in aluminum foil determined to be almost 1.5 ounces of marijuana in his possession. Stoudamire told officers that the drug was marijuana and that it was his, according to a police report. He was charged with misdemeanor counts of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia and was released on his own recognizance. Stoudamire and his lawyers waived a July 25 court appearance, entering a not guilty plea. Rick Unkelsbay, chief criminal attorney for the Pima County Attorney's Office, said Stoudamire could be sentenced to unsupervised probation and up to $2,500 in fines if convicted. But he said similar charges usually result in fines of about $200. When Martin was single, the decision to join the team would have been easy. But as a married man . . . "I had to run it by her," Martin said of his new wife, Heather. But perhaps the larger question facing the newlyweds is whether they will celebrate their first anniversary in New Jersey or in Portland. Rumors persist that a trade of Martin and Dikembe Mutombo for Rasheed Wallace and Ruben Patterson -- or some other combination of Blazers -- is still alive. But don't ask Martin. "I'm not here to talk about that. Period," Martin said after the United States defeated Brazil 110-76 in a preliminary round opener of the FIBA-Americas Olympic qualifying tournament Wednesday night at Roberto Clemente Coliseum. "I'm here to talk about USA Basketball." After adding center Elden Campbell and swingman Bobby Sura to the Pistons' roster and trading Cliff Robinson, the team's president of basketball operations hopes to make another deal before training camp. The trade might involve a small forward because the Pistons likely won't sign Carlos Delfino, whom they took with the 25th pick in the June NBA draft. Delfino's Italian team, Skipper Bologna, says the small forward from Argentina has no buyout clause or transfer deal in his contract. Team officials say they have every intention of keeping Delfino in hopes of winning the European championship, although Delfino has expressed a desire to play in the NBA. Dumars had hoped Delfino, 6-feet-7, could be a backup at small forward or shooting guard. With that appearing unlikely, Dumars might try to strengthen the Pistons at small forward, where Michael Curry started last season with Tayshaun Prince and Corliss Williamson providing backup. Dumars recently turned down a deal that would have sent one of his centers to Portland for small forward Ruben Patterson.
