Recently-retired forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim traveled to New York City on Wednesday to meet with a doctor that could save the Kings $6.2 million this season.
The doctor, appointed by the NBA, would need to confirm a diagnosis of severe arthritis in order for Sacramento to trim more than six million off of their 2008-09 payroll.
Abdur-Rahim hasn't played since Nov. 12, 2007.

Miami has had recent talks with the Kings and offered Shawn Marion for center Brad Miller and Kenny Thomas, according to several sources.
But Miami also wants the Kings to take Marcus Banks back in return.
Miller and John Salmons remain the most likely significant players to be traded.
According to a source close to the team, Portland is among the many teams that has expressed interest recently, as well.

The Kings have the option to keep Kenny Natt as their coach through next season and will have to make a decision by May 1.
Sacramento is just 4-17 under Natt, but he has impressed president Geoff Petrie.
"It's been very good," Petrie said. "The record is what it is, but I think he's very professional in the way he approaches his job. He's very interactive with myself and other people on staff and with the players on an individual basis when he needs to do it.
"Hopefully, there will be some additional fruits of his labor here as we go forward. But the person is solid, and he's certainly trying to go about it in the right way."
