Little Chance Draft Picks Will Be With Spurs Next Season

The Spurs took Tiago Splitter, a 6-foot-11 center-forward from Brazil, with the 28th pick in the first round of Thursday's NBA draft. Five spots later, in the second round, they selected Marcus Williams, a 6-7 forward from Arizona.

Neither figures to be to be on the roster next season.

Splitter is under contract to Tau Cerámica of the Spanish League for the 2007-08 season and has a hefty buyout clause that effectively prevents the Spurs from even considering bringing him to training camp.

Williams may be in Spurs training camp, but likely will spend the regular season with the Austin Toros, the National Basketball Development League team the Spurs are in the process of buying.

Spurs: Team Will Buy D-League's Toros

The Spurs have reached agreement to purchase the Austin Toros of the NBA’s developmental league, an NBA source said Thursday afternoon.

The agreement means the Spurs will become the sole affiliate of the Toros and will be responsible for hiring the team’s management and coaching staffs.

The Toros are expected to continue playing in Austin for the foreseeable future, the source said.

The Los Angeles Lakers are the only other NBA franchise to own a D-League team.

Finley Passes On Free Agency To Stay With Spurs

San Antonio Spurs swingman Michael Finley notified the team Tuesday that he will bypass the opportunity to become a free agent July 1 and play out the final season of his contract with the newly crowned champions.

Finley had until Saturday to forfeit next season's $3.1 million salary and return to the open market, but called his decision a "no-brainer."

"I originally signed for three years, with the last year being an option [year] if I didn't enjoy it here," Finley told ESPN.com. "I like it here."
