I am praying that Varsho proves me wrong. I would love nothing more. But all I can do is look at results to date.

Varsho had a great game, and I also would love nothing more for Varsho to do well the rest of the way in 2024. He has had a good last few games, and hopefully that carries over in the months ahead. Nobody is rooting for hit to fail, but you just have to judge a player with the results he produces, and Varsho has been awful with the bat since April 2023. Let's see how he does going forward, and I would be the first to say I was wrong if he has turned the corner with the bat. Varsho had a solid couple of weeks in April 2023, and then fell flat on his face the remaining 5 months. We will see if that changes this year.

Varsho had a very good couple of weeks in April of 2023, and then he was terrible hitting wise for the next 5 months. Someone called him a "Mini Mike Trout" in April of last year, and people like Randle were singing his praises in April of 2023.

Hitting 2 home runs today was great, but let's see how he does the rest of the way over the course of a 162 MLB season. We already seen what Varsho did in 155 Games and 527 AT Bats in 2023. Hopefully 2024 is a different one for him, and I would be the first to say so if it is.

Don't know what we'd do without the best defensive catcher in baseball.

Varsho had a 108 wRC+ in his last 203 plate appearances in 2023, so he wasn't terrible for 5 months. He actually finished the season quite strong. Prior to 2023, he had a 102 wRC+ in 1022 plate appearances, so the last two plus months of 2023 were far more similar to what he was prior to the trade than his first half 2023 numbers (which were awful). Obviously if Varsho was starting in CF everyday rather than LF, then he'd provide much more value to the club. I suspect he'll play a bunch at CF regardless this season, and it wouldn't surprise me if Kiermaier regresses to the point where he's slowly shifted into a backup role as the season progresses.

Framing/Blocking are the most underappriected aspects of catcher defense. Framing especially is the most important stat for catcher defense imo (until we get robo umps but who knows when that's gonna be)

But who is the best defensive outfielder of our generation compared to Lourdes?

Varsho's upper body is so big that his legs look disproportionally short. He looks like a bobblehead doll

They need to make a diamond glove award just for Varsho

It’s still hard to believe we got our most valuable player for a guy who would otherwise be our 3rd best catcher right now.

What a trade.

Varsho the only player in the lineup not to get on base or get a hit, while striking out twice. Catch was nice on one end, but his solid defense gets mitigated when he cannot produce at the plate consistently, aside from his occasional 2 Home Run game. A player still has to come to the plate 4 to 5 times a game, regardless of the solid catches he might make.

Team wins 5-1, guy still complains because not every player in the lineup got on base or had a hit.

Amazing.

Yes Mehar, it would be grand if every player in the lineup got a hit and a walk in every game. I think that would lead to probably a 110 win season! Has anyone thought of this yet?

It's not about the team winning, we're discussing individual players. You can't deny that he's a bad hitter. He's had a few of these 0 hit games this season (6 to be exact). Although his defense is elite, he's not helping the team score any runs.

It was a bad trade. Y'all just can't admit it.
