He's always been this big, but questions do need to be asked about that given the troubles he's seemingly having with the pace of the pitch clock.

tbh, he does look a little bigger. It was the politically correct and perhaps socially responsible move for the team to back Alek when he defended Kirk and when he went toe to toe with Anthony Recker about his own weight..... until it actually might have become a real problem. It might not be the issue, but everyone needs to be willing to take an honest look in the mirror to figure out what's true without any ego or offence.

Another hypothesis is that he gets a little too amped for certain games. Not sure he keeps his mind as well as some other dudes..... Playoffs, season opener, first home series with the renovations and the team really clicking. Then again, this doesn't likely explain his drop in veto.

Anyways long story short, maybe we are putting too much on monoah thinking he's an ace, and it's always possibility 2nd/3rd year players will regress, and based on his first 4-5 outings, it's baring that.

Another pitcher whose number (In big games - which is subjective), who doesn't show up is Chris Bassist, just look at his last year in any pivotal games, and he gets batted around (got destroyed in the playoffs). We are going to have to hope our offense to carry the load and defense comes up big.

This isn't regression. This is Manoah's command and stuff declining significantly so far in 2023.

Who would of thought at the beginning of the season that Manoah would be our worst SP.

and what's with these 1st inning collapses with this guy. maybe he's trying too hard. maybe try Jansen for a game with him. maybe Kirk's game calling and framing behind the plate is the problem.

He's always been massive for me. It's not an issue as a pitcher when you're not on a time limit, but it stands to reason that if he's forced to go at a much quicker pace than he's been accustomed to in his career it may have an impact.

I guess... but you're still kind of implying it could be a weight issue. A big guy needs more time between pitches? hmmm. Even if we go with that idea, then maybe he should trim down to solve the problem.

Anyway, I'm not sold on that. I'm not even sure his performance right now has anything to do with his size. But I can't think of a lager starter (or reliever?) in the bigs right now. And when you are at the extreme distribution, it's a question that warrants asking. Sabathia was pretty tough to watch those last couple of years. And whether that was weight or just age, I'm sure a few upper level Yankees execs would tell you they'd have preferred a slimmer version if they were being candid.

I believe his weight gain might be the reason for his trouble locating his pitches and dragging his delivery. It might have the effect of losing some velocity with his bodily control down plate. He looks heavier than his listed weight of 285, I'd hazard to guess 300-305 lbs.

Because he's forced to pitch at a much quicker pace now than he ever has, yeah, it's definitely a possibility.

Manoah definitely looks heavier than his listed weight. Being heavier around 300 pounds, and now with the pitch clock- can throw off your timing, balance, and centre of Gravity. No elite MLB pitcher should be weighing around 300 pounds. Instead of shedding about 15 pounds like he should have along with Kirk, both these guys have gained it. It is not Fat Shaming, but both these guys enjoyed too many Buffets this past off-season.

Very good 2-1 result on the series!

What's worse,,, is it better to have a struggling "ace" but a 4 and 5 showing signs of life OR dominant Manoah with a hopeless Berrios and Kikuchi? Personally, seeing our 4/5 starters help us win the first 2 games here was very very encouraging for the season.

Manoah pitched at least five innings in all 32 starts last season, including one in the wild-card round. He has completed the fifth inning just once in four starts this season.

Regression is defined as "a return to a former or less developed state" according to the Oxford Languages Dictionary. How does Manoah completely losing his stuff and command for the first time in his professional career qualify?

It isn't like suddenly his results are catching up with his pitching metrics or batted ball luck. He is simply legitimately a terrible pitcher right now in 2023, a mechanical mess on the mound unlike anything we've ever seen from him before. That isn't what regression is.

He's definitely not in shape. I don't care if he "looks" fat as long as he is actually in shape, but the dude's sweating like a pig only after a couple of pitches into every game, so I definitely think there is a conditioning related element here along with the new pitch clock.
