Incentive Clause | Glossary | MLB.com

Incentive Clause

Definition

Incentives in contracts allow players to earn additional money by achieving certain predetermined benchmarks. Major League Baseball's Basic Agreement prohibits incentives from being awarded based on statistical achievement. Thus, playing time is the near-universal means by which players receive incentives. Pitchers with incentive-laden contracts typically trigger the incentives based on number of innings pitched, number of games started, number of relief appearances, number of games finished, etc. Hitters will most commonly trigger incentives based on plate appearances. Some contracts also contain roster bonuses, which reward a player simply for staying on the active roster for a certain number of days.

In the 2011 wave of collective bargaining agreement negotiations, milestone bonuses were prohibited by the league, meaning that players can no longer receive contractual bonuses for reaching plateaus such as their 3,000th hit, 500th home run, 200th win, etc

Fully support keeping him unless we get major value. Yes, it might get really awkward. I’ll take awkward over getting fleeced. The chances of overcoming w/e went wrong are so much more important than the 10 cents on the dollar type of return we’d be getting until/unless he’s back. I suppose if it’s still really awkward you could trade him then, once his value is back up. He might never be a major league pitcher again and that sucks, but I’ll take my chances on that over minimal returns to give someone else the opportunity to get one of the best young pitchers in baseball back.

Yes I agree 100%. In baseball you hold all the leverage. Want to act like a spoiled child then do it in Buffalo. Want to do what it takes to stay successful at the Big League Level (stay in shape, work with coaches, have some humility) then yes you can earn the final rotation spot. It's too bad they seemed to coddle him so much last year as I think it led to some entitled behaviour. I'm hoping an offseason where we don't cave into any demands has led to a new attitude because there is no denying he has talent.

Agreed. I'm not sure if its .10... maybe a quarter.
But either way you take a chance at the upside, and if it all blows up and you lose the quarter in the end so be it.

Turner is a 1b/DH guy at this stage. Still leaves 3B open for someone to grab the job full time. The best outcome is if Martinez takes it and runs away with it. This offense needs more.

Tomorrow is arbitration day, IIRC.

Doesn't sound like there's been much movement on a multi-year deal.

Could they be the team bringing back Brandon Belt again? All he did was rake for them last year against RHP on a team friendly deal. If Justin Turner could play enough 2B/3B against Right handed starters, he could be an excellent way to both lengthen and balance out their lineup without breaking the bank.

I agree, Jays need a big lefty bat

The fact that he is still out there tells me the Jays might still be interested. He would be a nice addition just not at the price tag he is asking.

Otto Lopez DFA'd. A bit surprised they couldn't trade or sell him to another organization.

This guy any good? And who's role from last year is he taking?

Still one of the weirdest falls I’ve seen. Dude’s stuff was electric, then blisters, then arm problems, then batting practice. I guess if Manoah never comes back that tops it, but this one still hurts.

Hey, is there any conventional wisdom about what went down between him and Stroman? Always wondered.

Dude looks in shape. Much skinnier.

The 2 million extra in arbitration is worth it if he’s coming back like this.
