Is Klay Thompson an NBA caliber player?

Post#1 » by billinder33 » Tue Mar 5, 2024 5:12 pm

Regardless of age, if Klay was some no-name, mid-level draft pick on an expiring contact, would he find a home somewhere on some team's roster based on his current level of play? Or would he be en route to Europe or China?

Yes, definitely. Max Strus got 15m a year after a 35% 3 point shooting season based on his ability to stretch the floor and hit a variety of shot types. Duncan Robinson got close to 20m for elite shot making and floor spacing. JJ Redick once got a 23m million 1 year deal from the Sixers just to give them spacing the year they had the extra money. Of course, he played well enough they re-signed him for 13m a year over 3 years.

But the reality is that Klay IS older, so teams won't expect the defense to get back to where it was... and probably will assume the shooting will have more inconsistencies than there has been in the past.... but he's still a floor spacer that can hover around 40% while taking any type of shot imaginable. The key is to not force feed him a role and minutes based on who he WAS. He's got to be a 20 minute player that stretches to 30 when he's on a heater.

Yes, of course, he's just not starting caliber. He's a bench microwave that should be ideally given 15-20mpg on cred alone, and can earn his way up to 30 if he's on fire. But should also be noted that he can be on fire one half and ice cold the 2nd. Managing him requires a hands-on coach that can see the game in real time and adjust... so he's not in a good situation

tbh he might be our 5th best sg on the team. Offensively he's fine, probably still too big of a role since they're constantly running actions for him still. But defensively, rebounding. It's ugly.

Yes, he's an NBA player. But, he's isn't a star that needs to play heavy minutes anymore.

Of course he is. His peak was so darn good that you’re comparing him to that, which is like currently comparing Jaylen Brown to Duncan Robinson. Both are NBA players, but the nightly consistent output is vastly different.
