Pens lock up Crosby

The Pittsburgh Penguins are expected to announce on Sunday that captain Sidney Crosby has signed a contract extension worth over $100 million with an average annual salary of close to $9 million.

Crosby, 24, was entering the final season of a five-year, $43.5 million US contract extension signed in 2007. For each of the first four seasons of the last extension, Crosby was paid $9 million, and $7.5 million in 2012-2013.

Crosby, who has already won the Hart Trophy, the Art Ross and Rocket Richard Trophies and the Stanley Cup before his 25th birthday, missed the second half of the 2010-11 season and most of 2011-12 because of a concussion and neck injury.

Its impossible to deny that he's the most talented player in the league but that's a lot of money and a lot of years for a guy with so many injury problems.

Is there an injury clause to get out of the contract? If not, that is ballsy as hell

You wonder how much it would have been had Staal taken his offer.

That is a lot of money (and time) for anyone. This should be his last significant contract as well. It had to be done though. Someone else would have offered it to him.

Nope. And the contract isn't insured either.

Risky for sure, but since Crosby pretty much paid for their new arena they had to make it happen.

Here's how the negotiation went down:

Crosby's agent: We'd like to start wi...

Ray Shero: Where do I sign?

really, it doesn't matter what the terms are. What are you going to do? Lowball Crosby and risk him signing elsewhere?

Ya Shero was between a rock and a hard place on this one.

The league really needs to get these long contracts under control. 6 years should be the max.
