Kapanen, Harrington and a pick. That's all?

We also gave up a 2016 2nd round pick and retained salary.

Wow. That's horrendous.

Why are we paying $1.2 million of his salary for the next 7 years? Is that common in the NHL? It seems really stupid to me considering the NHL has a hard cap.

This deal is awful, congratulations to all the dumb fans that kept saying to trade him for a bag of pucks, you got your wish. He's a top scorer in the NHL, good luck finding one again.

Yeah it seems like a very underwhelming return for Kessel. Plus they had to eat salary. I guess if the Leafs get a top pick next summer it's all good though.

Lol we got fleeced. Mgt probably fell in love with a prospect (kapanen) and pulled the trigger.

WTF are the Leafs giving up a pick for? It's bad enough as it is.

Even worse. The first is lottery protected. If Pittsburgh misses the playoffs in 2016, we get the 2017 pick. If they miss in 2017, we get their 2nd round pick instead.

I was already unimpressed with the Marner pick over Hanifin. Then this. Awful.

I would say so. Its also the Leaf equivalent of the Vince Carter deal. It has "WTF were they thinking accepting that?!" all over it.

I don't think this deal is that bad. A couple of early picks and a few players. The salary there eating is marginal. The one guy there getting back is a former first round pick, and though the other two guys are likely 3rd and 4th liners of which the leafs don't need anymore of, there at least solid players with still some upside left. Gotta pay the price to change the culture. In that vein, the leafs are doing fine.

That's another thing I find funny. The Penguins pick is protected and we're giving them our 2nd rounder, so essentially instead of picking 30-35 we'll pick somewhere from 20-25. So the 1st round pick essentially just means we're moving up 10 or so spots in the draft, yay.

From what I understand, we are giving them their 2016 2nd rounder back (the one we got for Winnik) if we receive their 2016 first.

It is bad, though. If this is the best they could've done, I would've rather held onto him until a deal fell into place. I don't understand the urgency to trade him before the season started.

We traded a top 5 goal scorer in the NHL, had to give up a 2nd round pick in doing so, and retained salary. We then received a decent prospect in Kapanen, a projected 4/5 type defenseman in Harrington and a protected first round pick. That's an awful return.

This 'culture change' nonsense is just that, nonsense. It's another excuse. I wasn't the biggest Kessel fan because of his lack of backchecking and defense, but you'd have a hard time naming better pure goal scorers in the league. You don't give up a pick and retain salary for an elite player.

Return to Toronto Maple Leafs
