The Official 2023-2024 Utah Jazz Season Discussion Thread

The 22-23 season ended last night with a Nuggets' title, so now the 23-24 season begins!

The Jazz have a lot of assistant coaching changes. They made what may be an important hiring yesterday when they added Chad Forcier. Forcier was most recently an assistant coach under Budenholzer at the Bucks and a lead assistant coach on the 18-19 season Grizzlies, but more interesting to me are his nine seasons at San Antonio, the 08-09 thru 15-16 seasons, where he was the team's lead player development coach. Imo, San Antonio got a lot of good performances out of their non-lottery pick players over that period. Hopefully Forcier had something to do with that and can help Jazz players reach their potential.

The Jazz also added Mike Williams yesterday. Williams has been on a fast track trajectory. He is only 27 years old, and was most recently the head coach of the Washington Wizards' G League affiliate, the Capital City Go-Go.

Earlier, Hardy and the Jazz hired Scott Morrison, last season's Utah Stars' head coach, and hired former Rockets' assistant Rick Higgins.

I am not clear who is Will Hardy's lead assistant head coach. Anyone know?

We shall now refer to this upcoming Jazz season as 1 BL and the following season as 1 AL.

It says in the Book of Ainge:

1:1
For the Jazz were in the darkness in the year 1 BL
1:2
Behold, the darkness yay became light when a Slovenian ball apostle, Luka the Great came to Utah
1:3
And with Saint Lauri of Finland, they slayed the wicked Western conference
1:4
And in the summer of 1 AL, Luka the Great and Saint Lauri of Finland slayed the savage, pagan Celtics to claim the Holy Grail

*Monk noises* Ahh ahh ahh, ohh ohh, ahh ahhh

Agreed. Solid backup that brings good energy and hustle. I am interested to see what he will bring for the full season as a veteran backup and solid role player.

Tonight will probably be the strongest signal of how this season goes. Depending on the players picked, or how those picks are used it should give us a good idea of if we're trending toward a 30-win team or a 50-win team.

Ok... so we've got the draft behind us... got a glut of young guys in place. Now we've got a bunch of cap space. What's the ideal offseason for you guys? Do we bring in some interesting pieces, or try to absorb expiring for some assets and retain flexibility for later on?

Who's your ideal targets this offseason? The FA market seems like slim-pickins' to me. I feel that a proper facilitator would help this team a lot, and is a definite need. FA targets I'd be interested in:

Reeves: My thought process here would be to slot him as the PG. Might be laterally too slow for that full time job, idk. He is a really high BBIQ player, great passer, great decision maker, and efficient scorer. A lot to like about his game imo. And... he's big/lengthy.

Coby White: I think he's quietly improved, so more under the radar type of acquisition. I think he's been buried on a team that has no clue what they're doing. He's big for is position, shoots a decent clip from 3...would probably be cheap and low commitment. Age also fits our timeline. I think he might be a guy who could really benefit from a change of scenery, and the Jazz situation is about as ideal as it gets for his situation.

Naz Reid: Would be a phenomenal backup to Kessler, and generally give us so much flexibility down low. I know it's been rumored he wants to start... I just don't really see any team who's going to give him that roll.

Trade targets I'd be interested in: Obi Toppin, DeAndre Hunter, Kuminga.

I'm betting Clarkson finds a new home on a playoff team. Rudy Gay opts in because no one else will give him money lol. THT is a big question mark... He probably knows he could find himself out of rotation and struggling to get minutes by midseason, but there's probably very limited demand for him in the league. We probably end up with a bit of a confusing logjam at the 2 again.

We take on a bad contract and get an asset.

I agree, a true facilitator is still needed. Tony Jones says the Jazz hope Keyonte George can become a point guard. It didn't work trying to convert Dante Exum to a PG and it didn't work trying to convert Donovan Mitchell into a PG. My personal preference is a trade with Atlanta for Dejounte Murray. Their ownership has given management a mandate to get under the tax threshold. I don't think the experiment of Murray in the back court with Trae Young worked. My concern is Murray becomes an unrestricted free agent after next season so how much do you give up for him? The counter to that concern is the new CBA and how it impacts signing high salary players. I think he will have very few teams willing to pay him big $$$ next summer.

My other thought is Miami has openly discussed acquiring Dame from Portland. Portland just got their PGOTF in Scoot. Does Portland just move on with a rebuild this summer? (I think they should) Miami gets Dame but has to move contracts to make it work. Portland will need decent young players and future draft assets. I don't think Portland would want Herro if they just got Scoot. The Jazz could get involved as a 3rd team to facilitate that deal and land Herro for a couple picks and maybe a player.

I also like D. Vincenzo as an unrestricted free agent. He is also kind of a combo guard but his experience playing with the Bucks and Warriors has to be a positive. Decent size, 39% from 3, 4.5 rebounds per game better than a 2:1 A:TO ratio.

I like Coby White as a target but since he is a RFA Chicago can match the offer.

I like Naz Reid for about 15-20 minutes a night, but I think he will want a little more consistent role with a team but I am not sure if he can get it.

I'm somewhat warming to the idea of freddy all star.

Yes, he's a bit older. But he has championship experience. He's a bomber from 3. He leads the league in deflections time after time and averages about 2 steals a game. If Clarkson moves on he can kinda absorb some of that usage. He's a crafty scorer that could likely benefit George and possibly Och. He does a good job of taking care of the ball usually hovering around 10th best in assist to turnover ratio. Yes, he's older, yes he's not the size we're truly looking for at point guard but honestly a team situated like this really isn't a bad squad. Just missing that one lengthy wing. But our frontcourt is large enough to where you can put some explosive scoring on the floor.

FVV/THT/Dunn
Och/Sexton/George
Lauri/FA/Sensabaugh
Olynyk/Hendricks
Kessler/Jones

I only suggest this as I don't want to be worried about conveying a nice pick to okc as we try to figure out our pieces. Go for the playoffs. Give up a 17-21 pick to okc and hopefully get some good growth out of your youth this year.

Wondering how Taylor's twin brother plays and will the jazz look and joining the two brothers with next years draft? I'll be watching close and see if worth a gamble.

I know Donte Divincenzo has been brought up before, but with him declining his player option is he someone we should consider. A combo guard who can shoot better than Dunn and facilitate better than Sexton. Maybe not our long term point guard solution but I see him as an improvement from what we have now and he's only 26.

I have mentioned Divincenzo a couple times here. He is in my top 3 for the Jazz. Rumors are floating that he is looking at the Knicks. I probably prefer Dejounte Murray and the Hawks have said all vets are available except Trae Young.
