Sochi Olympics Thread

Post#1 » by Bank Shot » Fri Feb 7, 2014 1:09 am

Let's get this going.

This could be a mess but it's still the Olympics. I know a few people who have gone to the last few Olympics but are skipping out on Sochi. It seems like the safety issues have really dampened the enthusiasm for the Games.

The Opening Ceremonies are tomorrow morning.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/ukraine/10625034/Winter-Olympics-Bomb-threat-forces-plane-from-Ukraine-forced-to-land-in-Turkey-after-possible-hijack-attempt.html

"A Pegasus Airlines plane flying from Kharkov to Sabiha Gokcen landed at Sabiha Gokcen safely after receiving a bomb threat while in the air," the Turkish civil aviation authority said in a statement.
An official from Turkey's transport ministry said there were 110 passengers on board and confirmed that a bomb threat had been made but said the plane had landed safely.
Turkish media said that a Ukrainian man attempted to hijack the plane en route from Kharkov in Ukraine to Turkey, and divert it to Sochi where the Winter Olympics are taking place.

And so it begins.

It's so weird that some events have started a full day before even the opening ceremonies. Maybe it's happened before, but I don't recall it being so obvious in the past.

I remember it happening in the summer Olympics.

I hope it doesn't get too political

I simultaneously respect and fear Vladimir Putin.

Other than that one Snowflake-Ring, I've enjoyed the opening!

It was very interesting to see how loudly the crowd cheered for some non-Russian countries. The USA got a pretty favorable reaction, as did Canada. The likes of Belarus and Ukraine seemed to be crowd-favorites as well, while the Baltic nations got a more frosty reception.

And the Jamaicans. Got to love the Jamaicans! :D

i would think these will be the final 1-2-3
This is the event that Russia really wants.
A team event plus its figure skating.
You know there "history" when it comes to this sport....

There is such a difference between Ladies & Mens Slopstyle Skiing.
Its like night and day between the degree of difficulty.

The IOC has "officially reprimanded" the Norway team for wearing black armbands in memory of the brother of skier Astrid Jacobsen, who unexpectedly died this WE: "During the event, no political, commercial or personal messages are allowed".

Yeah right, this REALLY was dangerous propaganda :X

Bilodeau!! Bilodeau!!! :D :)

That guy has ice cold blood! He messed up and almost didn't get to the finals in men's moguls and then he pulls out the run of his life and blows away all the competition to win the gold and become the first person in olympic history to defend his title in moguls. :D

Worse meltdown: Peyton Manning in the SB or Shaun White in the half pipe? :o

The Slopestyle skiing yesterday was pretty interesting. I've never seen that before. Skiing down the hill and doing jumps backward is pretty insane.

Manning. Manning already had a choking rep fairly or unfairly and the SB just compounded it. White you could just say is getting old or had a flukey bad night at the wrong time. He's a proven winner in the past.
