Bolt of course.

Dude is unreal, broke an amazing record without even trying his best, that's INSANE. He could've gone for 9.5 easily. SICK SICK SICK.

By far the fastest man in the history of the world vs. a guy who's great in gimmick swim contests.

Not a tough pick, imo.

umm i really don't know. i know phelps has consideribly more medals but with all the different strokes it is easier (not easy) to do in swimming. right now i like bolt but maybe that is only because he is freshest in my mind

Bolt is just epic, but you gotta give Phelps some props for really making some good T.V. with that last race.

Phelps has more pressure on him than any other Olympian, everyone is looking at him. He's just as dominant as Bolt, only he dominates more events. Plus swimming is harder than running.

Yeah, no. Gimmick swim contests? Anyone can run a sprint. You have to spend time in the pool to master all the different strokes like Phelps has.

It's Phelps for me.

At least 5 of the 7 people who have said Bolt are from somewhere other than the US. Jealous? :)

Yeah, I can't stand his arrogance and cockiness and it's painfully obvious he's doping just like every other American athlete that was awarded with a medal! Screw them all!

Seriously, is it illegal to have an opinion different than yours?

No, but why do people believe Bolt is more impressive? Is it the medals? Phelps has won more. (14 to 1) Is it the world records? Phelps owns more. (6 to 1 I believe) Is it the ease of his victories? Phelps wins just as comfortably more often. Is it the difficulty? Phelps dominates multiple strokes in the water, short and long distances, Bolt just sprints for 10-20 seconds on a track.

Bolt is great, but he has a lot more he needs to do A LOT more before he can hang with Phelps. If Phelps wasn't American I feel more people would agree with that.

At least 3 of the 3 people who have said Phelps are white AND probably from the US.

I think it's just two, but both of us have backed up what we have said and have logic on our side.

I don't think it's fair to judge by quantity of medals. A swimmer has the opportunity to win a lot of medals, meanwhile a sprinter is very limited. The last dominating sprinter who could run 100, 200 and 400m was Michael Johnson, IIRC. A sprinter can't even run 100m hurdles, that's how different it is. Also, swimmers had it easier with achieving world records because of LZR suits and the pool. In sprint, WR isn't even recognized if the wind is too strong. And yet Bolt managed to break WR by .04 seconds (which isn't little in sprint) while showboating the last 20 meters.

The only argument that goes in Phelps' favor would be the years of dominating in swimming. Bolt has been on the scene only this past two years - and he is one year younger than Phelps, but swimmers can compete professionaly at younger ages.

Bolt is running the 200m and 4x100 relay.

Bolt in 200m with his top speed prolly not even achived in 100m looks to be good.

With 3 of the finalist in the 100m, with solid exchanges in the relay the Jamacians look good also

How many chances does Phelps have at medals ? 8 right ? Insane.
How many chances does Bolt have at medals ? Nuff said.

My argument isn't that Phelps is better at swimming than Bolt is at sprinting, but Bolt has nothing over Phelps. Phelps has the done infinitely times more on an Olympic stage to give him the advantage.
