If I had private messaging privileges (*cough-cough* Mods, *hint-hint* are you *nudge-nudge* listening? :p ), I would be able to contact you when I needed you. For the time being, just keep an eye out as much as you can, and I will try to get in touch with you (may not be until '09, though, I'm not sure).

may not be until 09?

really? i thought it was a basic draft and judge. am i confused as to the nature of the game or the start date?

i'm assuming we'll have 15 or so gm's. we'll start drafting, 12 hrs per pick schedule or something, and when the draft is complete the judging process can begin. i'm thinking this can start in one - two weeks. am i missing something?

I'm just saying to gremz that his services (mid- and post-season scoring) may not be needed until 2009. I'm not sure, but that my be the case. It does NOT mean that the league won't start until then. The will start in the next two weeks, the sooner the better, hopefully.

To be quite honest, I haven't made time to look over salaries in-depth and figure out if a salary-cap threshold is feasible for this game. If everyone is in agreement, maybe we should just make it a luxury tax threshold. Heck, we could even make it a "soft cap", where any salary above $71.15mil would ADD a point per $10K. Does that make sense to everyone? Is that something we could all agree to do?

71.5m is approaching sanity in a 15 team league imo.

Just a thought. Wouldn't applying a 71.15m cap essentially remove a lot of the challenge for such a small league? Heck in theory you could get very close to affording Calderon/Wade/LeBron/Bosh/Dwight and 7 Min contracts, while hardly getting punished for it. With 30 teams you could safely rule such a situation out, However 15 just seems to small.

Perhaps just invent a cap somewhere within reason?

You'd have to get them with every fifteenth pick.

Maybe you get Lebron and Calderon, but bosh and Dwight will be off the board before you get another pick.

True, thus the in theory quota. Just an example.Anthony, Boozer, JRich, JHo, Hedo, Ellis, Baron, Elton, Biedrins, Iguodala, TJ, Deng, Artest, Battier etc etc. You know the 20m+ contracts are going to be taken somewhere. I seriously believe there is enough wiggle room to get 3 studs if you're 1st pick, perhaps 4 if you're lucky.

If Biedrins, TJ Ford, Deng, and Battier are "studs", then I agree with your assessment, but three of them shakes out like this:
Baron
JR Smith
Iggy
Brand
Diop

Or something, and you've got to fill out your bench. That's no better a team than the teams the two writers had in their articles, but there was only two of them, making it easier to find their cheaper players.

OK, in all honesty, I haven't gotten alot done on this project. I've been busier now than anytime in recent memory, but bottom line, I haven't made time to research and mock salaries. We are still DEFINITELY going to do this, but I wanted to be forthright, in case this information seems a bit off-the-cuff.

From the bit I've looked at, the luxury tax threshold looks like a good limit for a 15-member league. There are 61 8-figure contracts in the NBA for the 2008-09 season, 54 of which belong to truly active players (thanks, DX).

In a blind mock of just the top 60 highest paid active role-players on their team, I included guys like Bobby Simmons and Kenyon Martin, who have a role but are still vastly overpaid. I also did a "serpentine" draft order, as in the 1st pick also selects 30th, 31st and 60th. The mean average total for 4 players was $56mil, and the range was between $61mil and $52mil. What this tells us is that it's not all bad if you have the 15th pick, as it will be easier to control your budget.

With that in mind, I believe a fair imaginary cap limit should be $90mil. Obtaining 11 other players for $35mil won't be easy, but that's the point, right?!

I'll see if I can make some more headway with this league tonight, but look for a draft order and date coming soon!

Thanks.

Although I may slide in Morrow at SG if he plays half as good as he did last night.

Would be nice to use that extra $2M to add a shooter off the bench.
