The Best Team Money Can Buy?

Post#1 » by bryant08 » Mon Oct 13, 2008 8:58 pm

Inspired by Christopher Reina's last article, I thought it would be a fun idea to see what some of you (and myself) could come up with. Basically, you build a team that can fit under the 08-09 cap of $58.68M, but you can't have any rookie contracts. The one alteration I'd make is that you can't put yourself on the roster (although that was rather humourous). I'd also say you can go between 13-15 players depending on what direction you want to take your team in.

Starting Five:
PG Derek Fisher - $4.7M
SG Dwyane Wade - $14.41M
SF Ron Artest - $7.4M
PF David West - $9.86M
C Brendan Haywood - $5.5M

Bench Players:
Anthony Carter - $797K
Matt Barnes -$797K
Ime Udoka - $1.08M
Jamario Moon - $711K
Hedo Turkoglu - $6.86M
Brandon Bass - $826K
Brian Skinner - $1.26M
Kurt Thomas - $4.2M

Did it with about 250K to spare. I built the team to have nothing but solid defense all across the board. I went with a couple of veteran PGs who are better without the ball but can make smart decisions with it and both are decent defenders. My greatest depth is at the 2/3 with two great starters and Barnes/Udoka/Moon and in some cases Turk to back it up. The only isisue with the tam could be the undersized big men off the bench, but they make up for it with long arms and great defensive intensity. Haywood will be taking up at least 27-28 minutes and West about 36, so that leaves a total of 32 minutes for the bench big men to take up front. Turk will likely be getting the 12 minutes West leaves behind, and the remaining 20 mins at C will likely be split between KT and Bass.

Let's see your ideas now :D

^Moon is a rookie contract. Actually, so is Bass.
Gordon-6.404
Parker-4.500
Lebron-14.410
West-9.862
Howard-13.758
48.934m
Bench-
PG-Telfair -2.3
SG-Rush-.798
SF-Barnes-.798
SG/SF-Green-.798
C-Ratliff-.798
PF-Smith-2.5m
PG-Hyde-.798
C-Obryant-.798

Total-58.522
Monster shooting around Howard and LBJ, primary bench players are Ratliff, Smith, Barnes, Rush, and Telfaire. I signed myself for good measure.

So..what do I win?

^That's what I was assuming, but Reina used both Bass and Moon, so I was like why not :P

I'll give it a shot.... :D

Starting 5

Devin Harris - 7,800,000
Manu Ginobili -9,905,248
Tayshaun Prince - 9,500,000
Andris Biedrins - 9,000,000
Dwight Howard -13,758,000

50,463,248

2nd Unit

Juan Dixon- 797,581
Ricky Davis - 2,300,000
Ime udoka- 1,080,000
Theo Ratliff - 797,581
Chris Andersen - 797,581

In Suits

Royal Ivey - 797581
Kareem Rush - 797,581
Dermarr Johnson- 797,581

Under the cap by $46,266

Solid Defensive starting 5 with shooters to compliment Devin Harris' penetration and Howards low post domination. :D Scoring off the bench by Ricky Davis and Juan Dixon. The duo of Ratliff and Andersen should keep the offense from driving.

And the award goes to.....??

Am I missing something? Are Bass and Moon not rookie contracts? If that's the case I'll drop smith and barnes, pick up bass and moon, and change BG to Calderon and collect the next 12 championships.

Bass and Moon are not ROOKIE-SCALE contracts, which is the guideline I think that article meant. Bass isn't even in his 1st contract, after having been given the axe from New Orleans.

I would like to do this as well, but I think it might be kind of boring if we all chose the same value players.

My suggestion: we make this a competition-based mock draft of players!

That way, no one has the same 6 end-of-the-bench bargain buys, and strategy in the drafting is key. I'd be up for organizing it, if folks are interested.

My only question is, how would be score this? I assume it would be by Reina value at the end of the season, but we could also tabulate win shares, net points or other figures, IF someone is willing to assist me in that effort.

I'll wait to see if there is any feedback for this idea, but if possible, I'd like to get it started before the season begins.

I'd do it. Sounds fun. Better than those "draft a team without regard to anything else".

So, that's 5 of us so far? Maybe I should make a thread on the main T&T board, to find more participants (if we want).

Kewl. Keep in mind, the "meat and potatoes" of this whole league would be the draft, and the end-of-the-season tally. So, not a whole lot of action going on in between.

I would approve of people making trades too, as long as other members of the league have veto power at a certain number. So, that may spice up the midseason action a bit. I can periodically update everyone on team scores (once we agree on a scoring format), so that people can know WHAT they're trading.

I think it's time to bring this idea to "the masses". I'll start a thread to invite people to join, and we can see how many participants we'll have. dcash4, if you're moderating right now, you can lock the thread I'm about to make (once I make it, of course! ).

locked and stickied your thread.

i think u should start a new thread, since u are going to be organizing it. you'll be able to make any edits to the first post / title that u see fit. if u do create a new thread, i'll edit your thread in the regular trade board since i locked it and you probably can't edit it anymore.

Thanks.

Yes, I will author a new thread, once we have some more details ironed out. I'd like to do the "building" and brainstorming here, though.
