GimmeDat's 2019 B.B.

Post#1 » by GimmeDat » Sat Jun 30, 2018 5:20 am

Thanks for following my boards over the last year, be interesting to see how the 2018 draft shakes out. Here's my first board for 2019.

This is sort of a 'watchlist' at this stage, and just listing my early top 30, so some notable guys are ommitted right now. For most, I've had a look at them but not a great depth of understanding for most, so this is obviously subject to major change. Just an introductory ranking based on how I feel which I can work on moving around going forward.

1. RJ Barrett
2. Nassir Little
3. Zion Williamson
4. Deandre Hunter
5. Cam Reddish
6. Romeo Langford
7. Sekou Doumbouya
8. Jontay Porter
9. Rui Hachimura
10. Quinten Grimes
11. Daniel Gafford
12. Bol Bol
13. Bruno Fernando
14. Simi Shittu
15. Jaylen Hoard
16. EJ Montgomery
17. Charles Bassey (I don't really get it from what I've seen of him so far, but given his rep, a potential riser)
18. Kris Wilkes
19. Ja Morant (this is an inclusion thanks for Jackson Hoy, I like what I see)
20. Keldon Johnson
21. Tre Jones
22. Naz Reid
23. Darius Garland
24. Emmitt Williams
25. Dylan Windler (barely seen him but am I wrong for falling in love with what I have seen?)
26. Louis King
27. Luka Samanic
28. Darius Bazley
29. O'Shae Brissett
30. Sagaba Konate

The guy has worst athleticism than Olynyk. Only CHL would have him high.

The skill is there, but I feel, as of right now, he has no shot against NBA players.
Robert Horry is better than MJ, because everybody knows that 7>6.

It’s a valid criticism of his lack of explosion, college will tell us more. As you said though, the skill is there. For a big strong kid he handles the ball well, has a decent shooting stroke and sees the court very well too. He understands the game at a young age and has legit NBA size

As far as I've seen, he's pretty subpar athletically in most senses, but he does seem pretty fluid, especially with the ball in his hands. His skill level seems high enough, and he's big enough, that I think he will be able to make plays in spite of his poor athleticism. I haven't seen full games so I can't speak defensively, if his physical deficiencies mean he's an absolute liability on that end then maybe we've got some issues there, but at this stage I like him.

I don't think he's looked really impressive in the exhibition games, so I'm going a bit by HS rep here, plus he seems like the sort of guy not to thrive in those settings, but rather actual college games, where he should be a high impact player. Defense, high IQ floor general, high level shooter, he has a lot of things going for him, and his brother is a guy that's impact exceeds his numbers.

That said, I'll probably end up dropping him to at least 20 or so by the end of the season, just because guys with his measurements, without some elite dynamism to compensate, rarely find themselves being starting quality pieces on NBA teams.

I haven't watched much of Hagans but am aware that a lot of people like him. I watched some highlights and the eye test didn't pop for me, but you could very well be right.

I don't understand why people are down on Bassey. Yeah he's raw but looks extremely mobile for his size and doesn't seem to have any real holes to his game. He should really be a highschool senior so it's not surprising he has some developing to do.i also think people are sleeping on Jordan Brown, really just needs to fill out.

I think for me, the verdict's just out on Bassey. I haven't really gotten a grip on him from the available footage, I'm keeping in mind that he was highly touted for the 2019 class, so eagerly awaiting more from him, but just not sure I've seen anything special that separates him at this stage.

I won't do another board until after the season has started, but I wanted to note a couple of changes I would make since I made the OP -

- Really love Hunter but maybe drop him down a few spots, below Reddish and maybe Langford. Had a rush of blood with that one, though I still think him being as high as #4 is justifiable.

- Keldon Johnson should be a lottery pick, I'm scratching my head a bit as to why I had him so low. Somewhere in that 10-15 range. I think his ceiling as a pick is even higher, like #8 or so.

There's a number of guys I could fluctuate in the late 1st, and a number of names that probably deserve to be there that aren't there at all, but that range is such a crap-shoot at this stage without college sample that I'll just leave it all for now.

Looking at it, I could easily put Hunter and Bol over him. But I do have him pegged as a lottery talent for sure. I'm a fan.

I feel this way at the start of a lot of drafts, at least when it regards the depth of quality... but I think that's just because there's so many avenues that a draft is fleshed out throughout a season.

If you look at mock's from last season of 2019, a lot has already changed. People are coming around on Kevin Porter and Ja Morant as big time sleepers.

There are so many returning players that could make a big jump and boost their stock (not saying they all will, just they have a chance to) - I would identify those as guys like Hachimura, Hunter, McDaniels, Wilkes, Fernando, Konate, Culver as just some examples.

I updated this board the other day I'm feeling more confident at this point - obviously my preferences differ from others, but for me, I look and see Doumbouya, Sh*ttu, Garland, J.Porter as some non-lottery guys and go 'wow, maybe this 1st round is deeper than I initially expected, and then again seeing guys like Montgomery, Tre Jones, Bitadze, Bowen and more as 2nd rounders and I'm encouraged about the depth we're starting to see, at least from my POV.

Give it time and more guys will start poking their heads out, imo. Mikal Bridges, SGA, Z.Smith, and more weren't really on the radars as high as they ended up going last season until their seasons started.

B.B. Update

1. Zion Williamson
2. Cam Reddish
3. Nassir Little
4. RJ Barrett

5. Bol Bol
6. Kevin Porter

7. Ja Morant (might be a bit reactionary to have this high but if he keeps it up, definitely deserves this sort of range)
8. Romeo Langford (banking on the 3 ball coming around. Could really be anywhere in this tier though, they're all pretty even)
9. Deandre Hunter
10. Naz Reid
11. Keldon Johnson
12. Daniel Gafford
13. Darius Garland* (waiting to see what happens with the knee and how that effects his draft sit., left him where I had him for now)

14. Talen Horton-Tucker (need to see more. Just an initial pegging based on what I've seen)
15. Quinten Grimes (haven't been impressed.. he keeps up how he's going right now and he's out of the lottery for me)
16. Rui Hachimura (This is a bit lower than I've had him previously but don't stress, I'm on the pro-Rui train)
17. Charles Bassey
18. Sekou Doumbouya (another guy I could have falling even further. Pedigree/potential keeping him this high)
19. Simi Sh*ttu
20. Jarrett Culver
21. Jaxson Hayes* (need to see more, this is a bit of a preliminary ranking to get him in somewhere)

22. Jontay Porter (obviously hard to gauge stock coming off the injury. No doubt a lottery guy if he didn't get injured)
23. Jalen McDaniels
24. Jaylen Hoard
25. Brandon Clarke* (need to see more, his stock pretty fluid right now for me)
26. Jalen Smith
27. Tre Jones
28. Lugentz Dort

29. Kris Wilkes
30. Shamorie Ponds

Spoiler:
31. Coby White
32. Sagaba Konate
33. Killian Tillie
34. Bruno Fernando
35. Kezie Okpala
36. Luka Samanic
37. PJ Washington
38. EJ Montgomery
39. Eric Paschall
40. Carsen Edwards
41. Dylan Windler
42. Zach Norvell
43. Tyus Battle
44. Brian Bowen
45. Kellan Grady
46. Jaylen Hands
47. Louis King
48. Nickeil Alexander-Walker
49. Darius Bazley
50. Tyler Herro
51. Goga Bidagze
52. Lindell Wigginton
53. O'Shae Brissett
54. William McDowell-White
55. Udoka Azubuike
56. Emmitt Williams
57. Kerwin Roach
58. John Petty
59. Kostja Mushidi
60. Borisa Simanic

*2nd round is starting to shape up for me a tiny bit, still incomplete though and obviously prone to fluctuation.

Some of the guys who I plan to add when I have a better feel for them -

- Deividas Sirvydis
-Isaiah Roby
- Grant Williams
- Andrew Jones*
- Tremont Waters
- Dean Wade
- Jordan Poole
- Josh Reaves
- Artus Zagars
- Moses Brown
- Herb Jones
