Can an MLS team win third series against Liga MX in CONCACAF Champions League?

MLS vs. Liga MX. That is the rivalry between leagues in the CONCACAF region.

But in reality, it hasn't been a real rivalry since CONCACAF Champions League started in 2008-09. Since then, Liga MX has won 12 of 14 two-legged series against MLS. That stat will not exactly put D.C. United, LA Galaxy, Real Salt Lake and Seattle Sounders fans at ease.

One of the two winners were actually the Sounders, back in 2012-13, when they defeated Tigres UANL in the quarterfinals. The other came just last year when the Montreal Impact beat Pachuca in the quarterfinals after Cameron Porter scored the series-winning goal in the 93rd minute.

Real Salt Lake and United might hold the advantage over their compatriots this go-around, as they will be facing their Liga MX opponents at home in the second leg. In the 14 series, MLS teams have hosted second legs four times. The two-series wins were two of those instances, with the other two coming in 2010-11 Finals between RSL and Monterrey and last year's finals when the Impact faced off against Club America.

Below you can find all 14 two-legged series between MLS and Liga MX since 2008-09.

MLS really needs to find a way to win this tournament.

Double header of soccer on Fox Sports 1 and Sportsnet World in Canada tonight.

Champions League Quarterfinals start tonight, think DC or Seattle have a chance of making the Semi-Finals?

I got CCL fever! Can't wait for tomorrow night.

As for tonight, really hoping DC can find a result in Mexico. Queretaro have had a really poor season so far and I believe they are the weakest Mexican team left. DC should advance, but can't come home to a poor road result.

For Seattle vs Club America, I've decided I really dont care who takes this one. They are probably my two most hated teams in soccer. I'd be happy to find out that they both eliminated each other, somehow.

0-0 at the half, but DC is doing well.

Seeing a good amount of possession, but not capitalizing on it.

Nice finish from Queretaro, now up 1-0.

DC needs to get back in this in the last 20 minutes.

1-0 would have been fine. That second goal is bad mkay.

I cant believe I'm watching the Sounders and America on top of the having to watch the Houston Rockets.

DCU looked awful in the final 30 minutes. Having these games basically during preseason does not give MLS any favours.

Seattle looked good, but even a tie may not be good enough.

Just like DCU last night, RSL fell apart in the final 20 minutes.

The quarterfinals during preseason just kills our chances.

Yet another reason I'd like to see MLS move to a Russian-like schedule.

I'm not sure if that's the answer. Even an extended preseason for the teams involved would help.

If anything needs to change, Champions League should start earlier and should be transitioned into one year. No reason for it to start in August.

Start the group stage in June and wrap up the finals in November, winner goes onto the Club World Cup in December.

D.C. United vs. Queretaro FC
RFK Stadium, Washington DC, USA
2015-16 CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals, second leg

D.C. United were only about 20 minutes away from as good a start to the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals as they could’ve hoped for. But after failing to hold on against Queretaro at Estadio La Corregidora, now they are forced to enter the second leg down 2-0.

D.C. drew perhaps the most favorable matchup of the MLS teams in the quarterfinal stage, but the task ahead is a difficult one. DCU’s most viable path to advance is holding Queretaro scoreless and scoring at least two goals to try to force penalty kicks. For any away Queretaro goals, D.C.’s chances to overcome will drop precipitously.

Santos Laguna vs. LA Galaxy
Estadio Corona, Torreón, Coahuila, México
2015-16 CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals, second leg

After the first round of the quarterfinals, the LA Galaxy are looking like the best-positioned MLS side to advance to the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions League, but can Santos Laguna spoil the fun?

The Galaxy have plenty of star power to advance following their first-leg scoreless draw at StubHub Center, but all the pieces that head coach Bruce Arena have brought in are not yet clicking on all cylinders. LA’s 2016 preseason has been relatively quiet lately, with one goal in their last three games. Five newcomers made the first-leg starting lineup, including Dutch midfielder Nigel de Jong and English defender Ashley Cole.

Another doubleheader of soccer tonight! L.A. is the only team likely with a shot of the next round.

I guess we'll see.

Also, I'm really hoping LA can make it past Santos Laguna with a beast performance by Dos Santos. Show the critics that MLS is no joke.
