Tough resume taking over a team with 8 straight playoff appearances and leading them to an 81-165 record.

So, as the story was able to sit for a bit and local media started digging in, a connected source pieced together that this is very likely (not 100% confirmed, but likely), Billups talking directly to Mannix as the two have a prior relationship and talk frequently.

This makes sense for a lot of reasons... One, Billups came to Portland expecting to breeze into a team that would win, not to coach a rebuild (prime Dame, Melo, CJ, playoffs, etc). Two, he's in the final guaranteed year of his deal and no extension talks, so he wants an answer on where this is going. If he's not going to get paid to continue to eat **** night-in-and-night-out with a rebuilding team, he'd likely rather just leave now and find his next career doing whatever else, back to assistant, see if a FO job opens up, go back to ESPN, etc.

But yeah, the line of "multiple teams lined up for his services" is ... questionable to say the least. Not unheard of mind you. Jason Kidd got another gig after multiple awful coaching stints, so lets not pretend a team (even the Lakers) can't make stupid decisions, but if you're just basing that quote of his resume, it's **** laughable.

NBA teams love to keep hiring the same failures.

He sure sucked. Needed to compete with all that Ayton, Camara, Rupert, Walker, Scoot starter pack overwhelming talent.

He originally inherited a team with Prime Dame and CJ. Then had a team with Dame, Hart, Grant and a group of defenders.

He thought he was getting a team that would coach itself and he failed at that. Now the team is rebuilding and he doesn't want to be a developmental coach.

He'd rather just leave and still get paid? No kidding. I personally don't care that much if he stays or goes. The team will suck next year regardless.

Sounds like he didn't want to be a coach at all.

Bro took the no-grind path to a HC gig. Literally just got handed a AHC job from a friend, then another friend just gave him the HC job in Portland.
