Here’s why you know it shouldn’t have been Wemby: no one was having this conversation on Jan. 1. So maybe Wemby was a better defender than Gobert from Jan-Apr (which I think is debatable and I can see the case for Wemby) but it is very clear that Gobert was a better defender from mid Oct-Dec.
Wemby finished the season extremely strong but he wasn’t doing what he was doing in March back in October or November. The DPOY is for the entire season. Gobert was elite for the entire season. Wemby was not. Next year might be a different story but the award isn’t “who was the best defender after Jan. 1”
Everyone who is arguing for Wemby is arguing for March 30th Wemby, and that wasn’t the same guy as Nov. 15th Wemby.
(And I’m someone who thinks Wemby could become the greatest defender of all-time)
