Really good read. Heat almost got Hauser. Celtics made him their top undrafted choice. Relationship with his agent (who reps Brown, Horford, Jrue, Grant formerly IINM) and Brad's history of building the Butler program helped in getting him too.

A group that included the Celtics, Warriors, Timberwolves, Spurs, Pelicans, Grizzlies, and Heat told Glushon they had interest in Hauser if he was not drafted. The Heat are known for turning undrafted prospects into sturdy NBA veterans, and Hauser’s camp agreed that if all offers were equal, he would join Miami’s summer league team.

“I saw what Duncan [Robinson] had done and Max Strus had done [with the Heat],” Hauser said. “Obviously, they have a good culture for producing guys like that.”

Meanwhile, the Celtics’ pursuit of Hauser was gaining momentum. There was brief debate among decision-makers about Hauser’s athleticism, how he would mesh with the current roster, and whether, at 6 feet 8 inches, he was best suited to play small forward or power forward in the NBA. But they concluded that these were minor concerns.

“We all agreed that he should be our top target once the draft ended,” Zarren said.

The difference was the Celtics offered Hauser two way contract while Miami only offered a chance to compete for one. A little more on this from Ira Winderman:

Sam who?: As the 2021 NBA draft came to a close, without a selection in either round that year, the Heat reached a preliminary agreement with undrafted Virginia guard Sam Hauser to be part of the team’s summer program.

Shortly thereafter, the Celtics contacted Hauser’s agent with an offer of a two-way contract.

Sam's limited minutes yesterday may have been to ease him into the playoffs. He probably earned more playing time.

Scooping him up as an UDFA and signing him to that dirt cheap contract he's on right now are definitely up there on the long list of good moves that Brad has made.

Hopefully now we can stop trying to fake-cut him every time he misses 2 threes in a row.

I just realized something while watching Game 5 highlights -- it's no longer surprising when Sam dunks.

Drew Carter is using the Hauwitser nickname I suggested here a long time ago. Not taking credit for it, but still waiting for royalty checks to come in.

He’s looking like a playoff riser given the minutes and opportunities. Will be huge moving forward.

I still prefer Hauserwitzer. It'll catch on when the world is ready. My time will come.

As long as the team keeps moving the ball, they will generate open 3 point looks. Hauser/Pritchard/Horford hitting those will be key going forward.

Hauser's wind up to his shot has gotten faster, he gets them off in tighter traffic and looks real confident out there. Extremely encouraging.

His nickname in my head is "Hause is going with Hauser."* I think of that literally every time he comes into the game.

*I just realized, 2 years in, that's not even the thread title!
