How did Naz Reid go undrafted?

Post#1 » by sca » Mon May 6, 2024 3:59 pm

I know that it's my hindsight bias speaking, but I've been following him since his rookie year, he's always had great tools to become a successful NBA player: good size, very good mobility, promising outside shot, very good scoring and great rebounding instincts. It's not like he was a senior with low potential either as he's declared right after a very good freshman year with an LSU team that went 28-7... I just don't understand. Why did he go undrafted??

He had a 14% bodyfat at the combine, significantly worse than the next fattest guy (Shamorie Ponds) at 9.8%. That excess weight helped contribute to an embarrassing score at the shuttle run (3.76, way slower than Tacko Fall) and fairly bad scores at lane agility, 3/4 sprint, and standing vertical leap. I think they assumed he wasn't an NBA athlete, and didn't have the commitment to lose the necessary weight to be an NBA athlete.

It was a mistake. These slightly overweight but otherwise talented players are some of my favorite sleeper picks. It's amazing how much more athletic you can get if you shave off 15 pounds of unnecessary weight. Try playing basketball with a 15-pound weight belt on.

Naz put in lot of work to get to his current shape. Just check any of his pics from rookie season...you can notice a huge difference. Also his defense was terrible in rookie season which was not surprising considering his body back then...he is still not a great defender but he has improved quite a bit since then.

As others have said, he was so out of shape that he wasnt viewed as a NBA caliber athlete. He has worked like crazy to get into great shape and now its really paying off.

He was so heavy in college he averaged under 0.7 BPG - in the NBA he has near 1 BPG in an average of 19mpg over his career. Pretty clear signal that he worked on his body.

Because thirty teams didn't want to draft him that night.

Your explanation makes more sense than that post, tbf.

Or ... is that the joke? Ah man, I spoiled it. :)

Not sure if I should share Naz's personal info but according to sources he has toes on his hands and fingers on his feet. May have hurt him at the combine.

Real question was why he signed that whack contract extension. I wanted the Raptors to go after him in free agency.

Ok, I had to google how Naz looked in college, he did look a bit fatty, but in some pictures, he looks great, maybe just ate too much cake before combine? If Tacko Fall outruns you, you will go undrafted.

He was fat. :burger:

I've been surprised before at certain weights I've seen him listed at. I think he's lost some weight since then. Similar story to Marc "man boobs" Gasol sliding to the latter half of the second round

Revisionist history.

He didn't go undrafted. He was the No. 6 overall pick in the draft. Timberwolves fans know the truth of how the 2019 draft actually unfolded.

IDK how they measure it but at 14% body fat you're pretty ripped, visible abs and all.
If you want to try to measure the elements of basketball that are supposedly unmeasurable, spend a game just watching Marc Gasol.

lol, what kind of body fat testing did they do? No way in hell no other guy was over 10%...

Isn't it funny how teams are more likely to believe that a player will develop a jumpshot than lose weight?
