I don't get why more star players don't take pay cuts in order to help their teams get more financial flexibility and thus give their teams greater opportunities to improve.... Once you reach a certain point, how much more money do you seriously need? I mean even lopping 10-20 million off the deal would probably help the Wiz a little... and it's not like Gil would be struggling to get by

Not really. The Wizards are already over the salary cap, we could choose to let Arenas walk and sign with another team and STILL be over the cap and have zero money to sign another free agent other than for the MLE (which we can use anyway).
When Arenas signs with us, no matter the asking price, we'll be slightly under the luxury tax thresh-hold and over the salary cap.
Remember, if Arenas taking a paycut meant we could sign a key free agent, then he would have done it (said so himself many times), but him taking a paycut in this scenario would have accomplished nothing other than making the wallet of our owner a bit heavier.

Are you serious
Arenas is worth 100 million
And you probably thought Hill was worth the 100 million contract he sign while he was injured too!
Not to mention that back then Hill was better than Arenas is now. Arenas hurts his knee... comes back, gets hurt again... team plays better without him... hmmm your right! Livingston is also worth at least double the MLE too right?

100M over 6 year for Arenas is very reasonable IMO.
But 136M over 6 for Booz is about 50M too much IMO

That's an overwhelming amount of mis-information.
1. We weren't better without Gilbert. Our offense took a huge hit and our defense improved microscopically (which is attributed to more PT for our best defender, Brendan Haywood, and hiring defensive specialist assistant coach Randy Ayers -- Arenas is actually a better defender than Antonio Daniels, his starting lineup replacement).
2. Arenas is in no way, shape, or form as injury-prone as Grant Hill. Gilbert got injured and refused to heed the warnings of the doctors and specialists, so he came back too soon and payed the price. He learned his lesson and will be back to 100% next season, and just as injury-prone as any other NBA player. No career-threatening damage was done to his knee.
3. Where does Shaun Livingston even come into this equation? He is a player who really might have done serious damage to himself -- damage that might not make him 100% ever again. Unless you, contrary to reams of evidence and medical support, want to argue that Arenas is in the same predicament, then there's nothing that can be taken from that statement.

Re: Gilbert Arenas could potentially get 100M
Arenas is easily worth 100m over 6 years. Much more than that is getting out of hand, though. He's a top 15 or 20 player in the league, and if the team/coach can find a way to implement his game into a solid team structure where his talents don't take away from what the rest of the team is doing, than he will be worth it.
I am intrigued to hear what people think Carlos will garner in FA next year, though. I--like most everyone here--think that 6yr/136m is waaaaay beyond reasonable. To me, 6yr/110m is the absolute MOST that I would consider giving him, and that is being very generous. What does everyone else think?

Re: Gilbert Arenas could potentially get 100M
after watching Boozer get schooled by andray blatche and watching the same thing happen to emeka, I'm beginning to question that prototype. I can easily see him being dominated by various elite longer , bigger PF/C's.
So no I wouldn't pay him that type of money when milsap is doing ok and kirilenko is still there. If other people were available i'd say Boozer was pricing himself out. but you know Boozer, Money Is A major Issue. Pulled that verbal contract and walking away thing in cleveland for a bigger payday. I'm sure he wants his next big pay day.
For the record my stance on boozer is I loved how good that duke team he was on was, I thought he was going to be good in the league, he got injured and I waited tfor him to come back to see how he does, and now hes a good PF. I have to watch him again, especially against long guys.
In head to head matches so far Brand, Kg, Tim duncan, J oneal, zach randolph have a better matchup
gasol , bosh, jamison and rasheed were outplayed in my opinion and he and Amare are back and forth as well even though offensively I rate amare bettter and rebounding Boozer.
As far as arenas money, I just want money to buy pretty things or free agents. Not sure how the terms work out. We did sell a pick to have extra money for all these things. Our free agency might be resolved quickly

How is this worse, if Arenas were on the Magic he would be their best player (sorry Dwight), not their 3rd best guy. If Shard can get $125m, why is Arenas not worth $100m?

Could a wizards capologist explain why they are giving him 100 million, I was listening to espn radio and some guy said if they offered 80 million that's still much more than any other team could've offered. I definitely think 100 mill is reasonable for Arenas, but according to that espn segment no other team could offer him that much, so are they just doing it not to get him upset or something and to show how loyal/dedicated they are?
Dwight Howard on his FT struggles:
"I just think everybody needs to stop talking about it," Howard said. "There's more to life than free throws."

Golden State has reportedly offered Gil a 5-year $100 mil deal.
President Trump told two senior Russian officials in a 2017 Oval Office meeting that he was unconcerned about Moscow’s interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election because the United States did the same in other countries

indeed you are correct
Then, according to my sources, the Warriors quickly burned the phones and offered former Warrior Gilbert Arenas a maximum-level contract, one that would pay him more than $100 million over five years. My source told me that Gilbert received a flurry of phone calls from the Warriors in the first 30 minutes of free agency.
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/wizardsi ... but_h.html
but in order for the warriors to try and offer him that money, they have to renounce the rights to Baron Davis, right?

Re: Gilbert Arenas could potentially get 100M
Potentially you could extend him a flat-rate contract at $16.67 million per season. A 100m/6yr deal with 8% graduated salary increases would look like this:
Age: Salary
26: 13,888,888.89
27: 15,000,000.00
28: 16,111,111.11
29: 17,222,222.22
30: 18,333,333.33
31: 19,444,444.44
Now the first couple years don't look so bad. But I have no doubt that I can't build a championship contender around a team paying Gilbert Arenas $20 million. On the other hand, I don't know how bad the last year of this deal will actually look in 2014. There are a lot of factors in play. His knee has to hold up and other health issues can't arise. He needs to maintain his quickness and athleticism so people respect his shot and he's able to push the tempo--his two most valuable assets. Also, he will be playing the majority of that last year at age 32, since his birthday is early in January. All indications are that he's a gym rat but you never know how a player's career will pan out.
Personally, I'm kinda gunshy at this contract. He probably deserves it, but I don't see any other teams willing to bid that for his services (though the Clippers would love to and he would probably go to LA to fight Kobe for the spotlight). Clearly you are locking him up through his prime, so he's gonna want to get paid. But coming off of an injury-plagued year, I'm not giving six year without leaving myself an opt-out in one of those years.
I am intrigued at the prospect of him going to Golden State, but $20million/yr is like slitting your wrists now and letting it bleed out over the next few seasons.

Arenas on the Warriors would form quite a prolific team in my opinion. I kind of actually like that fit..even though i expect a bit of clamor from the mass amount of staunch Monta Ellis' supporters when a Arenas/Ellis backcourt is suggested.

Yeah, most GSW fans think Ellis will be Arenas in no time, despite the massively noticeable lack of a perimeter shot. I really like Arenas on the Warriors. He's a better fit than the larger Baron, who can work with posting up and thrive in a slow-down system, too. Arenas spends a lot of time gabling the passing lanes and jacking 3-balls. Is there any better system for him than Nellieball?

Seriously though, gilbert should totally take the Golden State offer. Him the centerpiece of a run and gun chaos scoring team, coached by Don Nelson, on a team which doesn't give a crap about defense at all? Seriously, has there EVER been a better fit, especially since Phoenix has mostly abandoned the 05/06 run n gun game?
I'm not even a fan of his no-defense low percentage selfish chucking game and even I have to concede, it's a marriage made in heaven.

Re: Gilbert Arenas could potentially get 100M
The Wizards are about to have one of those offseasons that handcuffs their franchise financially for the next 5-6 years. The Magic did it last year but they at least had Dwight Howard to build around. This is just poor decision making by the Wizards; seriously Gilbert Arenas is NOT a $100 million player. The Wizards are signing themselves into mediocrity for the foreseeable future.

If I recall correctly, here are the current offers:
GSW: $101m/5yr
WAS: $124m/6yr
GSW: $101m/5yr
WAS: $124m/6yr
