Bay would cure a lot of things for the Sox and their clubhouse but they need another quality starter to keep up with the Angels in my opinion.

Re: Manny opened to be traded
This has the potential to be a truly awful trade depending on the prospects the Red Sox give up. Don't know what the Marlins are doing going after Manny, either. He's gonna help them win like 1-2 extra games over Hermida and they're going to give up a bunch of good prospects as well?
At least it sounds like the Pirates are going to make out reasonably well. Dump a **** reliever, a 31 year old LF who won't be around when (if) the rest of this team hits its prime and net a bunch of prospects? Score!

Re: Manny opened to be traded
Manny left in street clothes before the press came in.
Peter Gammons is reporting that these discussions will go through the night.
OT- this goes back to greenbeans and skip bayless thing. Everyone around who heard this rumor and had no internet connection, just radio, thought it was hanley. LOL. I kept saying, no way, it will be prospects. The question is, whether or not they flip those prospects for someone like bay or holliday. Good to know I was right, for bragging reasons of course.

If you mean Jason Bay as the 31 year old leftfielder he's actually 29. Boston can afford a prospect to make the deal work, they have a pretty deep farm system.
As for Gammons i dont know what his motivation is with any of this stuff but i know he cant stand Manny's antics.

I get the sense BP is repeatedly outscooping the mainstream media on this deal so guys like Gammons and Rosenthal are trying to put a blanket on the fire in the hopes that it falls apart. Carroll is at least offering specific hints that something is going on.

I think Gammons would gladly be outscooped if it meant getting rid of Manny in Boston.

Apparently a tentative agreement has been reached

MIAMI GARDENS — The Marlins have reached a tentative agreement to acquire Manny Ramirez from Boston as part of a three-team deal that will send Jeremy Hermida and three Florida prospects to Pittsburgh, an American League source said Wednesday night.
Officials with the Marlins and Red Sox did not confirm the deal but the source said a tentative agreement was reached about 10 p.m. Wednesday.
The Marlins will get Ramirez for Hermida, right-hander Ryan Tucker and two other prospects, with those four players being flipped to Pittsburgh for outfielder Jason Bay and left-hander John Grabow.
The Red Sox will send the Marlins enough cash to cover the remainder of Ramirez contract, as well as an unnamed prospect.
Pittsburgh gets Hermida and two prospects - two from Florida and one from Boston. One of the Marlins' prospects is believed to be Tucker.
The Marlins were one of several teams the Red Sox had discussions with about the enigmatic outfielder.
The Red Sox were seeking a big right-handed hitter in return to protect David Ortiz in the lineup, something the Marlins could not offer. The trade with Pittsburgh met that need by bringing them Bay.

The Marlins can go to hell for facilitating this, by the way. Manny might add a few wins, but of the three contenders the Marlins are still the longshot to win the division. Just because you're overachieving doesn't mean you start unloading your farm. That Sox prospect better be Lars Anderson or something.

Re: Manny opened to be traded
where's the unloading of their farm system? Tucker is a nice prospect, but the Marlins are overloaded with pitching prospects. Hermida is 1 of 14 arbitration eligible players the Marlins have next year, and they have OF prospects as well. They will probably have Maybin in CF next year and Ross can move to RF to replace Hermida.
Marlins might not be darlings among fans of other teams and the media, but in the NL East, they are 1 game out, getting Annibal Sanchez back tomorrow, Josh Johnson and Chris Volstad are coming into their own in the rotation.
Calling a team only 1 game out who just took 2 of 3 from the Mets and split a 4 game series in Wrigley might be getting a shot in the arm from Manny a "longshot" is a little hyperbolic.
Lol, they can "go to hell?"

OK, fair point on him being 29.
Afford isn't the issue. Sure, I guess they can "afford" to give up Lars Anderson, but it doesn't mean they should just because Manny Ramirez is a "bad influence" on 24 fully grown men in a clubhouse.

Semi-joking with the go to hell part because they potentially gave the Red Sox a good deal.
The Marlins' ownership honestly doesn't deserve a franchise if they make deals in fear of arbitration. Only the really good young players get high salaries out of it (and even then they're below what the market would give them.); Hermida shouldn't be a crippling force to their cap. The Rays put themselves in their current position by building up talent, the Marlins should be doing the same.
Pythagorean record and second and third-order winning percentage all say the Marlins should be 5 or 6 wins under .500, with luck taken out of the equation. 54 games of Manny isn't enough to make up the gap on paper, and probably won't do it in real life.

update:

OK, so now there are 3 sources reporting the deal has been brought to the commish. Looks just about done. ESPN will still not say anything though.
Manny being Manny in FLA is as close as it can get right now.

Re: Manny opened to be traded
you're right, one game out of 1st with 54 games to play, and because Pythagoras says they have no shot the front office should be in sell mode. On paper and reality are two different things. Maybe Manny gives the team a jolt of confidence and they go on a 8 game winning streak. Anything can happen, and frankly, its galling of you to act like you are. The Cards of a few years back weren't the best team in baseball yet won the World Series, ditto the 03 Marlins, the White Sox, etc. Who saw the Rockies making it to the World Series this time last year?HCYanks wrote:Lane1974 wrote:where's the unloading of their farm system? How DARE I not look at the game through hot streaks? Look, there's a chance the Marlins can make the playoffs. But even if they do make it, then what? Built around a few hitters and a crappy pitching staff, they're not favorites to blow the rest of the league away. Go ask Ranger fans how this strategy went against the 90s Yankees. Yes, there's a chance the Marlins can be like the '06 Cardinals and get hot at the right time and win the WS. But you're a lot better off trying to build a strong, stable system through your farm. The Marlins wouldn't have won it twice without doing that before.

Re: Manny opened to be traded
so by losing Jeremy Hermida, who they can replace, and Ryan Tucker who is a #4 starter or at best a potential back of the bullpen guy, what exactly are they giving up that is screwing their future?

People who could've been trade assets in the future? A team like the Marlins shouldn't be doing these rental trades.
