The Lesser Known Nicknames of the NBA

Post#1 » by romes3000 » Sat Mar 21, 2009 1:03 pm

We all know the famous nicknames of the NBA stars be it "The Mailman", "The Round Mound of Rebound", "The Human Highlight Reel", "King James", "CB4" or "Mamba" but what about those guys sitting at the end of the bench, those lesser known guys? Do those guys have nicknames? Or do those local commentators create ridiculous handles for their team's players? I did some research and got an overwhelming response on the lesser known nicks of the league.Let`s start off with the Raptors:

Thanks Rasho, I know that there's a ton more, sometimes they're just within a message board, sometimes they're on blog, either way I know there's a ton of these nicknames out there.

Orlando Magic (Courtesy of Ben @ ThirdQuartercollapse.com)

Tony Battie - Batt-Man (he has the Batman symbol tattooed on his left arm)
Marcin Gortat - The Polish Hammer
Rashard Lewis - Sweet Lew (he has this nickname stitched on the tongue of his sneakers, which you can see in this photo if you zoom in far enough); The Quiet Man; The Silencer
Mickael Pietrus - Air France

Tony is correct.

For Marcin you can also add 'Warlock', and our radio guys call him the 'Polish Prince'.

Pietrus is also called 'Peaches' (related to his jump-shooting/3-point shooting). 'Air France' is for when he takes off to the basket.

Jameer Nelson can be 'Mighty Mite' or 'Mighty Mouse'.

Courtney Lee can be anything from 'Spider-Man', to 'CLeetoris'. My personal favorite is 'Leesus':

Hedo can be referred to simply as 'Turk' (duh).

Anthony Johnson we refer to as 'Old Man River'.

Rafer is universally known as 'Skip 2 My Lou', obviously.

Dwight is 'Superman'. But he has others like 'D12', 'D-Flight', 'Beast of the East', 'Man Child'. Numerous other ones.

Redick we just call him by his real name of 'Jonathan Clay'.

Sac Kings:

Bobby Jackson - BJax or BobbyJ
Kevin Martin = K$ or Kmart
Spencer Hawes = Hawesome
Beno Udrih = Turnovermachine
Francisco Garcia = 'Cisco

Alot of new players on our team, these are ones that I could think of off the top of my head.

Back when Detroit used to have both Jerome Williams and Mikki Moore, everyone knew Jerome's nickname was the Junk Yard Dog but Mikki Moore was also known as Scrappy Dog.
