Bosh: Leaving Heat For Rockets Was Close

Jul 31, 2014 6:55 PM

Chris Bosh was close to leaving the Miami Heat for the Houston Rockets before ultimately deciding to re-sign on a five-year, $118 million contract.

"It was close. I'm not going to lie," Bosh said on "The Zaslow and Joy Show" on FM 104.3 The Ticket in Miami. "It was close. It was a weird situation because we were waiting so long and I didn't know what was going on.

"I think you're always in a situation where it is close even if you don't leave because teams got very aggressive on me," Bosh said. "And I guess as soon as LeBron (James) made up his mind, that's when everything could fall in line. But I was just waiting, so I didn't know what was going on."

Durant Will Do What's Best For Him As 2016 Free Agent

Jul 30, 2014 12:20 AM

Kevin Durant spoke extensively on Tuesday about his 2016 free agency for the first time.

Durant made it clear that he will put himself first when choosing his future.

“I’m going to do what’s best for me,” Durant told reporters in Las Vegas. “It’s hard to talk about that right now when I’ve got two years left in Oklahoma City. I’m just going to focus on that. I’m not going to make a decision based on what anybody else does.”

Durant is focused on the present, yet refused to rule out anything in the future.

Durant has been linked to the Washington Wizards in 2016.

“Look, we going to put it out on tape. It’s been talked about,” Durant said when asked about signing with his hometown Wizards. “Everybody’s asked me about it every time I go on Instagram or Twitter. All my friends ask me about it. So I’m not going to sit here and act like I’m naïve to the fact that people think about that stuff. But I just tell everybody that I’m here in Oklahoma City. I love it here. Who knows what will happen. I never close the door on anything. But I like where I’m at right now. So I can’t answer that question.”

Durant signed a full five-year extension in 2010 rather than insisting on a player option that would have allowed him to become a free agent earlier in his career.

“To be honest, I just didn’t know. I was 21. I didn’t know,” Durant said. “Obviously, when you sign a deal you want to have the best options for yourself, the best flexibility for yourself. But I loved Oklahoma City so much I just wanted to dedicate and show them that I’m all about the team."

Kings Sign Eric Moreland To Three-Year Deal

Jul 30, 2014 3:28 AM

The Sacramento Kings have signed Eric Moreland – a defensive revelation in NBA summer league – to a three-year contract, multiple league sources told RealGM.

Moreland provided an active, shot-blocking force for the Kings’ summer league team this month in Las Vegas, and the 6-foot-10 forward averaged 3.5 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.7 blocks in 19.2 minutes per game. After summer league play, DeMarcus Cousins expressed a desire for Sacramento to sign Moreland.

Several teams, including the Golden State Warriors and New York Knicks, had interest in a free agent deal with Moreland. Still, Moreland and the Kings negotiated toward a contract over the weekend and into the week, and both sides agreed to terms on Tuesday.

Moreland showed versatility in ball handling and defending during the NBA pre-draft process, but went undrafted and reached a summer league agreement with the Kings.

Moreland, 22, was an early entry candidate as a redshirt junior at Oregon State University, where he averaged 8.9 points, 10.2 rebounds, nearly two blocks and one assist a season ago.

Kyrie Irving Agreed To 27.5 Percent Of Salary Cap If He Triggers Rose Rule

Jul 29, 2014 11:17 AM

Kyrie Irving will receive just 27.5 percent of an adjusted NBA salary cap if he triggers the Derrick Rose rule by winning MVP or getting voted an All-Star starter next season, according to Mark Deeks.

Irving presumably received a player option on his contract in exchange for not getting the full 30 percent possible.

Paul George set the market by taking just 27 percent in order to get that fifth-year player option last offseason.

If Irving neither wins MVP or gets voted an All-Starter, his contract extension will be worth the max possible amount (about $89 million). If he achieves either of those honors, he’d gain about $9 million. However, he could have gained more than $16 million.

By leaving that potential $7 million on the table, Irving set himself up to become a free agent sooner.
